Senegalese international football star Edouard Mendy has sponsored the construction of three water wells in partnership with Afrikicks, extending access to clean and sustainable drinking water to a mosque, a village, and a school community as part of a targeted humanitarian intervention.
The project is aimed at addressing long-standing water challenges in underserved communities, where access to safe drinking water has remained a daily struggle affecting health, education, and community life. The newly completed wells are expected to serve hundreds of residents, worshippers, and schoolchildren.
According to Afrikicks, the wells were deliberately positioned to maximise impact. The mosque well will support daily prayers and hygiene needs, the village well will provide households with a reliable source of clean water, while the school well will ensure pupils and teachers have constant access to water for drinking and sanitation, improving learning conditions.
Speaking on the initiative, the Founder and President of Afrikicks, Oumarou Idrissa, said the partnership reflects the organisation’s commitment to dignity-driven development across Africa.
“Clean water is the foundation of life, health, and education,” Oumarou Idrissa said. “This project goes beyond infrastructure. It restores dignity and gives communities the stability they need to grow. We are grateful to Edouard Mendy for using his platform to support practical solutions that change lives.”
Mendy said his decision to support the water wells was inspired by a desire to give back and address one of the most basic challenges faced by many African communities.
“Water is life,” he said. “When people have access to clean water, everything improves, health, education, and hope. I am proud to work with Afrikicks on a project that delivers lasting impact at the community level.”
Edouard Mendy is widely respected both on and off the pitch. He currently plays for Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League and remains a key member of the Senegal national team. He rose to global prominence during his time at Chelsea, where he won major titles including the UEFA Champions League and established himself as one of the world’s top goalkeepers.
At international level, Mendy has been instrumental in Senegal’s success, guarding the post during the country’s historic Africa Cup of Nations triumph and cementing his status as a national hero for the Lions of Teranga.
Community leaders and beneficiaries welcomed the water wells, noting that water shortages had long disrupted daily life, worship, and school attendance, particularly for women and children who often travel long distances in search of water.
Afrikicks said the initiative forms part of a broader regional programme focused on water access, education, youth empowerment, and sustainable community development across Africa.
“This partnership shows what is possible when influence is matched with responsibility,” Oumarou Idrissa added. “We will continue to work with leaders, institutions, and individuals who are committed to real, measurable impact.”
The water wells have since been officially handed over to the beneficiary communities and are already in active use.
