Super Falcons Triumph Over Morocco in Historic WAFCON Final Comeback

Head Coach Justine Madugu Lauds Team’s Resilience After Thrilling 3-2 Victory in Rabat

Rabat, Morocco – July 26, 2025 – Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered one of the most dramatic and spirited performances in Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) history, mounting a stunning comeback to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2 in the final of the 2024 edition of the tournament. The hard-fought victory secured Nigeria’s record-extending 12th WAFCON title and reaffirmed their dominance in African women’s football.

Head coach Justine Madugu, visibly emotional at the final whistle, praised the mental strength and unwavering determination of his players, who overcame a daunting 2-0 deficit in the opening half to emerge victorious in front of a passionate home crowd at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

A Nightmare Start for Nigeria

The final began on a difficult note for the Super Falcons, who found themselves trailing by two goals within the first 24 minutes of play. The hosts, buoyed by the support of thousands of Moroccan fans, pressed high and dictated the tempo early on.

Morocco’s forwards capitalized on Nigeria’s defensive lapses, finding the net twice through blistering counterattacks and incisive midfield play. With the West African giants struggling to retain possession and unable to break through Morocco’s organized defense, it looked as though the Atlas Lionesses were poised to lift the trophy on home soil.

Tactical Shift Sparks Nigerian Revival

Recognizing the need for urgent intervention, Coach Madugu made crucial tactical substitutions just minutes into the second half. He brought on winger Omorinsola Babajide and attacking midfielder Jennifer Echegini in a bold reshuffle designed to inject pace and creativity into Nigeria’s attack.

The decision proved decisive.

In the 56th minute, substitute Esther Okoronkwo pulled one back for Nigeria, igniting hope and belief within the Super Falcons camp. Just eight minutes later, 19-year-old forward Folashade Ijamilusi—another rising star in Nigeria’s lineup—finished off a flowing move to draw the game level at 2-2.

With the momentum now fully on Nigeria’s side and the Moroccan defense rattled, Jennifer Echegini, who had been instrumental since her introduction, fired home the winner in the 81st minute after a brilliant team move that left the home side stunned.

Coach Madugu Applauds Team Spirit

Speaking during the post-match press conference, Coach Justine Madugu showered praise on his players, singling out their “mental resilience” as the key to the unforgettable turnaround.

“If they didn’t have mental resilience, they would have given up,” Madugu told reporters. “But they kept believing and they earned this victory. We were down but never out. That’s the spirit of champions.”

The coach, who took over the reins of the Super Falcons just over a year ago, described the final as one of the most emotionally demanding matches of his career.

“The first half was tough, no doubt,” he continued. “But at halftime, we reminded the girls of what it means to wear this jersey—the pride, the history, the expectations. They responded magnificently. I couldn’t be prouder.”

A Glorious Moment for Nigerian Football

The win adds another glorious chapter to Nigeria’s WAFCON legacy. The Super Falcons have now won 12 out of the 15 editions of the tournament since its inception in 1991, cementing their status as Africa’s most successful women’s football team.

More significantly, the comeback against Morocco demonstrated the team’s evolving tactical maturity and the emergence of a new generation of players stepping up when it matters most.

Jennifer Echegini, whose late winner sealed the title, was named Player of the Match. The 23-year-old has been instrumental throughout the tournament, earning praise for her composure, creativity, and ability to turn games around.

“This win means everything,” Echegini said. “We fought for every ball, and we never lost faith. To score the winning goal in a WAFCON final is a dream come true.”

Morocco Earns Praise Despite Loss

Despite the loss, Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses earned plaudits for their spirited performance throughout the tournament. They had hoped to claim their first WAFCON title after finishing as runners-up in 2022, and their early dominance in the final showcased just how far the team has come under the guidance of coach Reynald Pedros.

“We congratulate Nigeria,” Pedros said. “They showed the heart of champions. We will learn from this and come back stronger.”

Looking Ahead

With the 2025 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers around the corner, the Super Falcons’ victory in Rabat sends a strong message to the rest of the continent and beyond. Coach Madugu emphasized the importance of building on the momentum.

“This win is not just about today,” he said. “It’s about building a future where Nigeria continues to lead, inspire, and raise the bar in African women’s football.”

He also acknowledged the Nigerian Football Federation, technical staff, and fans for their unwavering support.

“We dedicate this trophy to every Nigerian who believes in our women. The future is bright.”

Celebration Across Nigeria

Celebrations erupted across Nigeria as fans took to the streets, waving flags, dancing, and singing in jubilation. Social media was awash with praise for the team, with President John Dramani Mahama reportedly sending a congratulatory message to the players and coaching crew for their “indomitable spirit and commitment to national pride.”
