Support the IGP, Stop Calls for His Dismissal – Kofi Bentil

Kofi Bentil, Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa, has strongly urged individuals and groups advocating for the dismissal of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to abandon such efforts. Amid growing calls for the IGP’s removal over perceived issues related to the 2024 general elections, Bentil has highlighted the importance of maintaining stability within the police service and commended Dr. Dampare’s exemplary leadership during a critical period in Ghana’s history.

In a Facebook post on December 20, 2024, Bentil stressed that the focus should be on supporting the Ghana Police Service rather than undermining its leadership. He described attempts to dismiss the IGP as counterproductive and detrimental to the nation’s peace and security. Bentil lauded Dr. Dampare for his dedication to duty, emphasizing the pivotal role he played in maintaining national stability during the tense election period.

“I am breaking my FB [Facebook] leave again to tell all those crazy people attempting to upset the safety and security of Ghana that this nation belongs to us all, and you cannot force yourself on anyone without severe consequences!!! Leave Dr Dampare alone!!” Bentil wrote.

He praised the IGP’s efforts, noting that his actions were instrumental in ensuring a peaceful election process, despite the tense political climate. According to Bentil, Dr. Dampare’s decisive leadership helped Ghana avoid potentially catastrophic situations.

“He has done his job for God and Country. And Ghana is better for it. His honest work has led to a tense election settling very quickly. Things would have been far worse if he had not stamped his feet. And he did all of this without the Police firing any shot!”

Bentil’s remarks come amid reports of ongoing attempts to discredit the IGP, with some political actors alleging bias in the police service’s handling of election-related matters. However, Bentil has dismissed these claims, arguing that the IGP’s actions were guided by a commitment to uphold the law and protect citizens’ rights.

Dr. Dampare’s leadership during the 2024 elections has been widely recognized as a significant factor in ensuring a smooth transition of power. Despite the heightened tensions, the police service, under his command, managed to maintain order without resorting to violence or excessive force. Bentil highlighted this achievement as evidence of the IGP’s professionalism and dedication to duty.

In addition to addressing the calls for Dr. Dampare’s removal, Bentil also drew attention to a legal case currently before the Supreme Court, which seeks to prevent the politicization of appointments of security heads. He argued that any attempt to dismiss the IGP or other security chiefs while this case is pending constitutes contempt of court.

“Any such removal can and should be reversed!!! As unlawful and unaware!!!” he asserted, calling for respect for the rule of law and the judicial process.

The lawsuit in question aims to establish a framework that ensures the independence of security agencies by shielding their leadership from political interference. Bentil believes that this case is crucial for safeguarding Ghana’s democratic institutions and protecting the integrity of the nation’s security services.

Critics of Dr. Dampare have alleged that his leadership has been influenced by political considerations, but Bentil has rejected these claims, describing them as baseless and unfounded. He reiterated his support for the IGP, urging Ghanaians to recognize the critical role he has played in preserving national peace and stability.

Bentil’s call for restraint and support for the police service has resonated with many Ghanaians, who have taken to social media to express their solidarity with Dr. Dampare. Several commentators have echoed Bentil’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for unity and cooperation in addressing the challenges facing the country.

The controversy surrounding the IGP’s position underscores the broader issue of politicization within Ghana’s security agencies. Observers have noted that the frequent turnover of security heads, often influenced by political considerations, has undermined the stability and effectiveness of these institutions.

Bentil’s intervention highlights the importance of insulating security agencies from political pressures, ensuring that their leadership can operate independently and effectively. As Ghana navigates the post-election period, the focus must remain on strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national unity.

Dr. Dampare, who was appointed IGP in 2021, has consistently emphasized the need for professionalism and accountability within the police service. His tenure has been marked by efforts to reform the institution, improve public trust, and enhance the welfare of police personnel. Despite facing criticism from some quarters, he has remained steadfast in his commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens’ rights.

Bentil’s call to “leave Dr. Dampare alone” serves as a reminder of the critical role the IGP has played in maintaining peace and stability in Ghana. As the nation looks to the future, it is essential to support leaders who prioritize the country’s well-being over partisan interests.

The ongoing debate over the IGP’s position highlights the need for a broader conversation about the role of security agencies in Ghana’s democracy. Ensuring their independence and effectiveness is vital for safeguarding the country’s peace, stability, and democratic principles.
