President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, for securing the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), praising the players for their resilience, determination and unwavering national pride.
The Super Eagles claimed third place at the continental tournament after defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties in Saturday’s playoff match, following a goalless draw at the end of regulation time. The victory over the seven-time African champions marked a strong finish for Nigeria after a challenging semi-final setback earlier in the competition.
In a statement released by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the team for their ability to rebound from disappointment and conclude the tournament on a high note.
According to the President, the Super Eagles displayed courage, unity and the true spirit of Nigeria by refusing to allow their semi-final defeat define their campaign.
The Nigerian side had suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to host nation Morocco in the semi-finals, a result that dashed hopes of lifting the AFCON trophy. However, Tinubu noted that the players demonstrated remarkable mental strength by regrouping quickly and focusing on the bronze medal encounter.
“Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed,” the President stated.
“However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.”
The bronze medal match, played in Casablanca, was fiercely contested as both Nigeria and Egypt sought consolation after narrowly missing out on the final. Neither side was able to break the deadlock in open play, with strong defensive performances and goalkeeping keeping the scoreline level until the final whistle.
During the penalty shootout, the Super Eagles showed composure and confidence, converting four spot kicks while Egypt missed two attempts. The result secured Nigeria’s place on the AFCON podium and added another medal to the nation’s rich football history.
President Tinubu described the achievement as a source of pride for millions of Nigerians at home and abroad, emphasizing that the team’s performance symbolised hope, perseverance and national unity.
He noted that the players’ response to adversity reflected the “can-do attitude” for which Nigerians are widely known, both in sports and in other spheres of life.
“This bronze medal surely feels good like gold,” Tinubu said, highlighting the emotional significance of the achievement despite falling short of the championship title.
The President added that Nigerians would celebrate the team as they received their medals in Rabat, describing the accomplishment as worthy of national recognition and appreciation.
Throughout the tournament, the Super Eagles delivered impressive performances, defeating strong opponents and demonstrating tactical discipline, teamwork and fighting spirit. Their journey reignited national passion for football and once again united Nigerians behind the green and white colours.
Football analysts have noted that Nigeria’s ability to compete strongly against Africa’s best teams reflects the country’s continued relevance on the continental stage. The bronze medal finish further reinforces the Super Eagles’ reputation as one of Africa’s most consistent football nations.
Fans across Nigeria and in the diaspora took to social media to celebrate the victory over Egypt, applauding the players for restoring confidence after the semi-final disappointment. Many described the bronze medal as a reward for hard work, commitment and belief.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) also joined in the celebrations, praising the squad and technical crew for maintaining focus and professionalism until the final match of the tournament. Officials noted that the performance provides a strong foundation for future competitions, including World Cup qualifiers and upcoming international tournaments.
Several former international players have similarly commended the team, urging authorities to build on the momentum by investing in youth development, improved domestic leagues and long-term planning for the national team.
For President Tinubu, the Super Eagles’ achievement goes beyond football, serving as a reminder of what Nigerians can accomplish through unity and perseverance.
“The team’s determination in the face of disappointment is a lesson to all Nigerians,” the statement added, emphasizing that setbacks should never define the nation’s aspirations.
As celebrations continue, attention now turns to the future of Nigerian football, with expectations that the Super Eagles will use the AFCON experience as motivation for greater success ahead.
The bronze medal victory may not be the ultimate prize, but for many Nigerians, it stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, pride and hope — values deeply rooted in the nation’s identity.
