Germany forward Deniz Undav has praised the attacking strength of Ghana’s Black Stars, describing them as a consistently difficult side to face despite their recent struggles on the international stage.
Undav made the comments after scoring the decisive goal in Germany’s 2-1 victory over Ghana in an international friendly played at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart. The forward, who plays his club football with Stuttgart, came off the bench to deliver a late winner that secured victory for the European side in a tightly contested encounter.
The match formed part of the March international break, with both teams using the fixture to fine-tune preparations ahead of upcoming competitions. While Germany maintained their winning run, Ghana’s search for consistency continued, extending a winless streak that dates back to October 2025.
Germany began the game on the front foot, controlling possession and dictating the tempo for large periods of the first half. Their dominance eventually paid off just before the break when Arsenal forward Kai Havertz converted from the penalty spot.
The penalty was awarded after a handball incident involving Ghana defender Jonas Adjetey inside the box. Havertz stepped up and calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper at the stroke of half-time, giving Germany a deserved lead heading into the interval.
Despite going behind, the Black Stars showed resilience and returned in the second half with renewed energy and purpose. Ghana gradually grew into the game, improving their pressing and creating more attacking opportunities as they sought an equaliser.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 70th minute when Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku brought Ghana level. The goal was well-worked, with Derrick Kohn delivering a precise cut-back into the box, allowing Issahaku to finish confidently and restore parity for the visitors.
The equaliser shifted momentum and briefly put Germany under pressure, as Ghana looked capable of turning the game around. The Black Stars’ attacking movement and pace caused problems for the German defence, underlining the very qualities Undav would later acknowledge.
However, Germany regained control in the closing stages and found the breakthrough through Undav. The forward capitalised on a lofted pass from Leroy Sane, reacting quickly to latch onto the ball and slot home the winner.
Speaking after the match, Undav expressed his delight at scoring and highlighted the atmosphere created by the home supporters.
“It was incredible to hear the fans behind me, I really enjoyed that. For me, it was fantastic to come on and score the winning goal. It was a perfect evening,” he said.
Reflecting on the team’s overall performance, Undav noted that while Germany dominated large parts of the game, there is still room for improvement, particularly in converting chances.
“We had almost complete control in the first half, but we need to be more dangerous and convert more of our chances,” he added.
The forward also reserved praise for Ghana, acknowledging the quality within the Black Stars squad, especially in attack.
“It’s always tough against a team like that. Ghana has good attacking players, as you could see from their goal. But we kept going and were determined to win. We need to work on the little things to become more efficient,” he said.
Undav’s comments reflect a broader respect for Ghana’s footballing pedigree, even at a time when results have not gone in their favour. The Black Stars have historically been one of Africa’s most competitive national teams, known for producing technically gifted and dynamic attacking players.
However, recent performances suggest the team is still searching for the right balance between attack and defence. While their ability to create chances remains evident, defensive lapses and inconsistency have proven costly in key moments.
The defeat to Germany follows another heavy loss earlier in the international window, raising further concerns among fans and analysts. Despite flashes of quality, the inability to secure positive results has become a growing issue for the team.
For Germany, the victory marked a successful international break, with the team winning both of their matches. The results provide a confidence boost as they continue to build momentum and refine their squad.
For Ghana, attention now turns to upcoming fixtures, where the focus will be on rebuilding confidence and ending the winless run. The Black Stars are expected to play further international matches in the coming months as part of their preparations for major competitions.
The technical team will be keen to address key areas, including defensive organisation, game management, and consistency in performance. At the same time, the attacking quality highlighted by Undav offers a positive foundation to build upon.
As the team looks ahead, the challenge will be to translate promising performances into tangible results. With a talented pool of players and strong support from fans, the Black Stars remain capable of turning their fortunes around.
For now, however, the focus remains on regrouping and improving, as Ghana seeks to rediscover its winning form on the international stage.
