Real Madrid and Brazil star Vinícius Júnior has opened up about the influential figures who inspired his rise to global football stardom, naming Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo Nazário, and NBA icon LeBron James among his greatest idols.
In an exclusive feature with GQ Spain, the 25-year-old Brazilian forward reflected on his incredible journey from Flamengo to the Santiago Bernabéu, describing his current life as nothing short of a dream.
“My idols are Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James and our Brazilian legends Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Neymar,” Vinícius said, as quoted by Madrid Zone via GQ Spain.
The dazzling winger, widely regarded as one of the most electrifying talents in world football today, emphasized how surreal it still feels to wear the iconic white jersey of Real Madrid and represent the Brazil national team.
“Playing for the biggest club in the world and the Brazil National Team still feels like a dream,” he added.
From Flamengo to Football Royalty
Vinícius José Paixão de Oliveira Júnior, known simply as Vinícius Jr., burst onto the scene in Brazil with Flamengo. His dazzling pace, tight control, and fearless dribbling quickly caught the eye of European scouts, and in 2018, Spanish giants Real Madrid made their move.
At just 18 years old, the young forward made the bold transition to Europe. Although he initially spent time adapting with Real Madrid Castilla, his determination and flair saw him gradually become an indispensable part of the senior squad.
Over the past few seasons, Vinícius has blossomed into one of Real Madrid’s most consistent and dangerous attacking threats. His combination of speed, creativity, and an improving eye for goal has earned him accolades both in Spain and on the global stage.
Learning from the Legends
Vinícius’ list of idols reveals much about his approach to the game. Cristiano Ronaldo, a Real Madrid legend and five-time Ballon d’Or winner, is known for his relentless work ethic and hunger for success—qualities Vinícius has openly admired and emulated.
Similarly, his affection for fellow Brazilian greats such as Ronaldo Nazário, Ronaldinho, and Neymar reflects his deep connection to the rich footballing tradition of his homeland.
“These are players who inspired me growing up. They changed the way people saw football—always playing with joy, creativity, and pride,” Vinícius once said in a previous interview.
Adding LeBron James to the mix underscores Vinícius’ admiration for greatness beyond football. The NBA star is renowned not only for his sporting excellence but also for his leadership and off-the-court influence—areas where Vinícius himself is beginning to make his mark.
Close to Ballon d’Or Glory
Vinícius Jr. came agonizingly close to clinching the Ballon d’Or last season, finishing second behind Manchester City midfielder Rodri. His standout performances throughout the campaign, including crucial goals in the Champions League and consistent brilliance in La Liga, earned him global praise.
He was also instrumental in helping Real Madrid lift several trophies, cementing his place among the elite. Although the Ballon d’Or ultimately eluded him, many believe it is only a matter of time before Vinícius gets his hands on the coveted individual prize.
Former Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, during his tenure, once remarked:
“Vinícius is a player who makes the difference. He can win games singlehandedly. His potential is limitless.”
A Symbol of a New Generation
Vinícius’ influence extends beyond his club. As a rising star in the Brazil national team, he is seen as the face of a new generation of Selecão talents eager to restore Brazil’s dominance on the global stage.
Though Brazil fell short in recent international tournaments, Vinícius’ performances have given fans renewed hope. His chemistry with players like Rodrygo, Raphinha, and Endrick is seen as the future of Brazilian football.
He’s also become an advocate against racism in football, speaking out boldly after being targeted during league matches in Spain. His courage off the field has made him a symbol of strength and pride for many young players around the world.
The Road Ahead
Looking forward, Vinícius remains focused on helping Real Madrid and Brazil achieve greater success. He has already won multiple trophies with Los Blancos, including La Liga, UEFA Champions League, and Spanish Super Cup titles. Yet, he remains hungry for more.
“The ambition never stops. I want to win everything—again and again. I want to leave a legacy,” he said.
With his best years still ahead of him, Vinícius Júnior is not only living his dream—he’s redefining what it means to be a modern football icon.
As the football world watches, one thing is clear: Vinícius Jr. isn’t just following in the footsteps of his idols. He’s carving out a legendary path of his own.
