Yaw Sarpong, Founder of Asomafo Gospel Group, Passes On

Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician and founder of the renowned Asomafo gospel group, Yaw Sarpong, has passed away, marking the end of an era in Ghana’s gospel music history.

The sad news was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, in an interview with MyJoyOnline. As at the time of filing this report, the family and management are yet to officially disclose details surrounding the cause of death or funeral arrangements.

Yaw Sarpong’s passing comes barely a month after the death of Maame Tiwa, a prominent and long-standing member of the Asomafo music group. Her demise deeply shook the gospel fraternity and was particularly painful for Yaw Sarpong, who regarded her as a pillar of the ministry. The back-to-back losses have left many gospel music lovers and industry players in mourning.

For several years, the celebrated musician had been battling ill health. Though he remained spiritually active and committed to his calling, his condition occasionally forced him to withdraw from public performances while he focused on medical treatment and recovery. Despite these challenges, his passion for gospel music and ministry never waned.

Yaw Sarpong is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the evolution of gospel music in Ghana. Rising to national prominence as the leader of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, he played a defining role in shaping the sound, structure, and discipline of modern Akan gospel music.

At a time when gospel music was still developing its identity, Yaw Sarpong introduced a refined choral style that blended traditional Akan melodies with deep biblical messages. His compositions were not only musically rich but also spiritually grounded, making them suitable for worship, reflection, and Christian teaching.

Under his leadership, the Asomafo group became known for its strict discipline, vocal excellence, and lyrical depth rooted firmly in Christian doctrine. Many musicians who passed through the group later became respected gospel ministers and music leaders in their own right, further extending his legacy.

Over the decades, Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo produced numerous timeless gospel songs that continue to resonate across generations. Among the most iconic are Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa. These songs remain regular features in church services, Christian gatherings, funerals, and national religious events.

His music transcended entertainment, serving as sermons in melody. Through his songs, he addressed themes such as faith, repentance, hope, perseverance, humility, and total dependence on God. Many believers testify that his music strengthened them during moments of hardship and spiritual uncertainty.

Beyond the studio and the stage, Yaw Sarpong was revered for his humility, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to Christian values. He believed gospel music was a ministry before it was a profession, a principle he consistently instilled in members of the Asomafo group.

In recognition of his immense contribution to Ghana’s music industry, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards. The award celebrated not only his decades of musical excellence but also his influence on gospel music education, performance standards, and ministry.

Tributes have since poured in from fellow musicians, church leaders, cultural icons, and fans across Ghana and the diaspora. Many have described his death as a national loss, noting that his influence extended far beyond gospel music into Ghana’s cultural and spiritual identity.

Several gospel musicians have credited Yaw Sarpong for laying the foundation upon which contemporary gospel music thrives today. His insistence on quality composition, disciplined rehearsals, and spiritual maturity helped elevate gospel music to national and international recognition.

As the nation mourns, his legacy remains firmly etched in Ghana’s musical history. Though his physical voice has gone silent, the messages embedded in his songs will continue to minister to hearts for generations to come.

Yaw Sarpong leaves behind a powerful heritage of faith, music, and mentorship. His life stands as a reminder that true impact is not measured by fame alone, but by the lives transformed along the journey.

Africa Live News extends its deepest condolences to his family, the Asomafo gospel group, and the entire Christian community. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
