In a significant diplomatic and humanitarian development, the International Human Rights Association (IHRA), under the leadership of Ghana’s King Ayitey Anumle Oyanka I, has entered into a historic partnership with Donimu (Malta), a renowned European institution dedicated to knightly-charitable service and global humanitarian outreach.
The agreement, signed on July 30, 2025, signals a new chapter in cross-continental collaboration between Africa and Europe in the defense and promotion of human rights, social equity, and humanitarian advancement.
The landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between King Oyanka, who serves as the West African Chairman of IHRA, and Chev. Jean Pierre Calleja, SoC, Founder and Leader of Donimu (Malta). The ceremony was graced by the presence of His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Pierre Vatel, Leader of V.A.T.E.L. International and Head of Donimu’s Foreign Office. Together, the leaders pledged to combine their expertise, global networks, and institutional influence to empower vulnerable communities and uphold the dignity of all people.
The partnership represents a concrete commitment to a shared mission: using humanitarian diplomacy and rights-based advocacy to support marginalized populations, raise awareness, and initiate development programs that prioritize justice and inclusivity.
“A Vision of Shared Humanity”
Speaking at the MOU signing ceremony, King Oyanka described the partnership as a timely and transformative step.
“We are thrilled to embark on this journey together,” he stated. “This partnership will amplify our collective impact and bring us closer to realizing our shared vision of a world where human rights are universally respected and upheld. With Donimu’s long-standing legacy of charitable service and IHRA’s grassroots activism, we are poised to build real, lasting change.”
King Oyanka, who is also a recognized traditional ruler in Ghana and a vocal advocate for cultural diplomacy, emphasized the importance of combining cultural wisdom and international frameworks in achieving global development goals. He said the IHRA’s work across West Africa has already seen the implementation of community education, conflict resolution, and youth empowerment initiatives — and this new alliance will expand those efforts onto a global stage.
Donimu Malta Brings Knightly Tradition to Modern Global Issues
On his part, Chev. Jean Pierre Calleja welcomed the opportunity to link Malta’s knightly-humanitarian tradition with the human rights mission of IHRA. He noted that Donimu’s roots in the values of service, dignity, and protection of the vulnerable align perfectly with IHRA’s mission.
“This MOU marks a significant milestone in our collective pursuit of human rights advancement,” Calleja said. “We believe in a world where heritage and humanitarian service walk hand in hand. Working with King Oyanka and the IHRA provides a powerful bridge between European and African efforts to make a meaningful difference.”
Calleja stressed that modern humanitarianism must rise above borders and politics, focusing instead on the universal values of dignity, justice, and compassion. He added that Donimu (Malta) intends to launch co-branded projects with IHRA in education, public health, cultural heritage protection, and peacebuilding.
A Bridge of Diplomacy: V.A.T.E.L. International’s Pivotal Role
The presence of H.E. Ambassador Dr. Pierre Vatel at the signing underscored the diplomatic depth of the alliance. As Head of V.A.T.E.L. International and Donimu’s Foreign Office, Dr. Vatel has long championed international cooperation in humanitarian work. He played a crucial role in facilitating the partnership between the two organizations.
“This partnership is not merely symbolic. It will yield measurable results,” said Dr. Vatel. “We aim to jointly implement programs that directly impact at-risk populations, whether in refugee camps, underserved urban areas, or post-conflict regions. Our joint work will be grounded in transparency, accountability, and compassion.”
Dr. Vatel also noted that IHRA and Donimu share a strategic vision for institutional development and capacity building, particularly through the training of young leaders and human rights defenders across Africa, Europe, and the Mediterranean.
Promoting Justice Across Continents
The International Human Rights Association (IHRA), with chapters across West Africa and beyond, has gained respect for its advocacy in areas such as freedom of speech, cultural preservation, gender rights, and anti-human trafficking. Under King Oyanka’s leadership, the IHRA has hosted numerous training seminars, policy dialogues, and youth-focused empowerment forums.
Donimu (Malta), meanwhile, has built a reputation across Europe for its commitment to knightly service — rooted in the traditions of Maltese history — but reimagined for the modern world. The organization focuses on charitable giving, protection of religious and cultural minorities, and international humanitarian diplomacy.
With this new partnership, both institutions plan to jointly roll out:
- Human rights education campaigns in schools and universities
- Social justice initiatives targeting women, children, and refugees
- Cultural exchange programs to promote unity and peace between Africa and Europe
- Training and certification programs for future humanitarian leaders
- Collaborative fundraising drives for critical humanitarian emergencies
A New Dawn for Ghana-Malta Cooperation
Observers see the alliance as a sign of growing South–North cooperation and people-to-people diplomacy that is no longer dominated by state-to-state frameworks. For Ghana and Malta — two nations steeped in cultural pride — this is a model of partnership that centers humanity at the core of development.
“This is bigger than two organizations,” said King Oyanka. “This is a message to the world that African and European institutions can come together, in mutual respect, to do good — to serve, to protect, and to uplift.”
The collaboration is expected to attract further international attention, with future summits and joint field missions already under discussion for late 2025 and 2026.
