Zoomlion Ghana Limited and Geo Pomona Waste Management (Pvt) Ltd. of Zimbabwe have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening waste management systems through strategic collaboration between the two countries.
The agreement was signed at Peduase Lodge in Accra in the presence of senior government officials and private sector representatives from both Ghana and Zimbabwe, marking a significant step in cross-border cooperation within Africa’s sanitation and environmental sector.
The partnership is focused on enhancing waste management operations through the sharing of technology, technical expertise, and best practices. It is expected to contribute to improved sanitation standards and environmental sustainability in Zimbabwe, particularly in urban areas facing increasing waste management challenges.
Under the terms of the MoU, Zoomlion Ghana Limited will bring its extensive experience in integrated waste management to the partnership. The company has established over 36 waste recycling and processing facilities across Ghana, positioning it as a key player in the sector.
Geo Pomona Waste Management, on the other hand, will provide local expertise and operational capacity within Zimbabwe. Its understanding of the country’s waste management landscape is expected to support the effective implementation of joint initiatives under the agreement.
Officials from both sides indicated that the collaboration comes at a critical time, as Zimbabwe continues to face challenges associated with rapid urbanisation, rising waste volumes, and environmental concerns. The partnership is expected to provide practical solutions to these issues through coordinated efforts and knowledge exchange.
A key component of the agreement includes the promotion of sustainable waste management practices. This will involve increased focus on recycling initiatives, efficient waste collection systems, and the development of waste-to-energy solutions aimed at reducing landfill pressure while generating additional value from waste materials.
The collaboration is also aligned with broader efforts to promote intra-African partnerships and encourage the use of homegrown solutions to address development challenges across the continent. By leveraging shared expertise, both organisations aim to create a model that can be replicated in other African countries.
If successfully implemented, the partnership is expected to deliver several long-term benefits, including cleaner urban environments, improved landfill management, expanded recycling activities, and job creation within Zimbabwe’s waste management sector.
The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation between the two entities, with implementation activities expected to commence following the signing ceremony. Both parties have expressed commitment to ensuring that the partnership yields measurable results and contributes meaningfully to environmental sustainability goals.
