ANFOESEC @ 60: Late Harrison E. Owu Science and Maths Quiz Centre Commissioned to Boost STEM Education

By Morkporkpor Anku

Anfoega, April 7 (GNA) — Anfoega Senior High School has commissioned a Science and Mathematics Quiz Centre aimed at strengthening science education and improving student performance in national competitions. The initiative forms part of activities marking the school’s 60th Anniversary celebration.

The facility, initiated by friends of the late Harrison E. Owu and led by alumnus Mr Herman Prosper Delali Agbo, has been dedicated to honour his enduring passion for science education.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr Agbo explained that the project was conceived in response to concerns among alumni regarding the school’s recent performance in the National Science and Maths Quiz. He noted that the initiative reflects a collective effort to invest in academic excellence and reposition the school as a strong contender in science-based competitions.

According to him, the project also serves as a tribute to the late Mr Owu, who passed away in 2012, describing the centre as a meaningful way to preserve his legacy while contributing to future generations.

Mr Agbo disclosed that approximately GH¢50,000 had been invested in establishing the facility. He further revealed plans to create a dedicated fund to support teachers and students involved in science and research activities within the school.

To ensure effective management and sustainability, a Governing Board chaired by Professor Atsu Francis has been constituted. Dr Selase Kwaku Dotse, a Research Scientist, and Mr Kwaku Eric Vlidzo, a Media, Sales and Marketing Consultant, will serve as Co-Chairmen supporting the implementation of the project.

Mr Agbo added that an initial seed fund of GH¢10,000 had already been provided to kick-start activities of the centre. He expressed optimism that although immediate results may not be evident this year, the school is expected to record significant improvement in science competitions from next year.

Dr Selase Kwaku Dotse, speaking on behalf of the family of the late Mr Owu, described the initiative as a powerful transformation of grief into a lasting legacy. He commended the alumni for honouring their colleague through an educational intervention that would benefit generations of students.

He urged students to take full advantage of the facility and reaffirmed the family’s commitment to supporting the project. As part of this commitment, he announced an additional GH¢5,000 contribution towards the initiative and pledged to serve on the governing council to ensure its continuity.

Professor Atsu Francis, Chair of the Governing Board and a former student closely associated with the late Mr Owu, emphasised that the centre is designed to be institutionalised for long-term impact. He noted that beyond preparing students for competitions, the facility would strengthen general science education and expand into a full-scale centre with remote teaching support.

Mr Albert Kwasi Dodo, Headmaster of Anfoega Senior High School, commended the alumni for their foresight and dedication. He stated that the centre would significantly enhance teaching and learning, particularly in science and mathematics, and contribute to improved academic outcomes.

The commissioning of the Science and Mathematics Quiz Centre marks a significant milestone in the school’s 60th Anniversary celebrations and underscores the critical role of alumni engagement in advancing education.
