A new wave of gospel musicians in Ghana is gradually shaping the industry with authenticity and purpose, and Essi Donkor is quietly positioning herself within that movement. Born on November 11, 1991, in Ekumfi Kokodo in the Central Region, her journey reflects a blend of faith, discipline, and steady growth in ministry.
As the fourth of six children, Essi grew up in a structured environment that demanded responsibility from an early age. Following the loss of her father, she was raised by her mother, whose guidance played a crucial role in shaping her character and spiritual foundation. This background continues to influence both her personal life and her music.
She began her education at Ekumfi Kokodo D A Primary School and later attended SABs Preparatory School in Mankessim. Her secondary education was completed at Methodist Senior High School in Saltpond, where her leadership qualities began to emerge. She proceeded to Central University in Accra for her undergraduate studies and later earned a Master’s degree in Finance from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology KNUST in Kumasi.
Essi Donkor’s musical journey is deeply rooted in the church. She started singing at a young age and gradually took on more responsibilities, eventually serving as a music director and coordinator. She currently functions as one of the worship leaders in her church, consistently playing a role in guiding congregational worship.
Her transition into recorded music began with the release of her debut single M’aseda on July 1, 2024, a song centered on gratitude and thanksgiving. She followed this with Hallelujah on January 1, 2026, further establishing her presence and reinforcing her message of praise and devotion.
Although still developing her presence in the mainstream gospel space, Essi Donkor is building her work with intention. Her focus remains on ministry driven music rather than commercial trends, a direction that gives her identity a clear foundation.
With additional projects in the pipeline, she is gradually expanding her catalogue while maintaining consistency in message and delivery. Her journey reflects a balanced combination of education, leadership, and spiritual commitment, positioning her for long term relevance rather than short term attention.
