Akua Donkor Dies: A Legacy of Grassroots Activism and Political Determination

Akua Donkor, the charismatic founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has passed away at the Ridge Hospital in Accra. Her death, confirmed by a family member to Citi FM on Tuesday, October 29, occurred on Monday, October 28.

The cause of her passing remains undisclosed, yet the loss is felt deeply across Ghana, where her bold presence and commitment to grassroots communities left a lasting impact.

As a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, Akua Donkor became known for her strong advocacy for farmers’ and women’s rights. With a distinctive style and an unyielding voice, she dedicated her career to championing the needs of the less privileged, especially those within rural communities. Her advocacy was always rooted in her own background, as she understood the unique struggles of farmers and grassroots communities, which fueled her political aspirations. Through her work with the GFP, she established herself as a defender of the people, a role that resonated with many Ghanaians.

Over the years, Akua Donkor’s bold personality and outspoken nature captivated the public and set her apart in Ghana’s political landscape. She was undeterred by the many challenges she faced, including a lack of substantial financial resources. Her determination led her to run for the presidency multiple times, an endeavor that few had the courage or tenacity to pursue, especially without the backing of major political donors. Each campaign was a testament to her resilience and her unwavering belief that the voice of the common people deserved representation at the highest level of government.

In her pursuit of the presidency, Akua Donkor made history by repeatedly appearing on the ballot. Having contested in two previous elections, she was also listed as the third candidate on the ballot for the upcoming 2024 presidential race. Her passing not only leaves a void within her party but also marks the end of an era in Ghanaian politics. Akua Donkor’s journey and determination offered a unique chapter in Ghana’s political history, one where the grassroots were given a platform and voice.

Akua Donkor’s political journey began when she was elected as the Assemblywoman for Herman, where she first entered public service. Her initial attempt at the presidency took place in 2012 when she applied to run as an independent candidate. However, this attempt was thwarted by the Electoral Commission, which disqualified her, citing unmet eligibility requirements. Although this setback could have deterred many, Akua Donkor responded with remarkable grace. Rather than pursuing legal action, she chose to support Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) in his campaign, demonstrating her commitment to the broader goal of representation for grassroots communities, even if she herself could not be a candidate.

Her presidential journey was not without further challenges. In 2016, she once again faced disqualification, this time after the headquarters of the Ghana Freedom Party in Kabu, located in Ghana’s Eastern Region, was gutted by a fire in early January. Despite these obstacles, Akua Donkor’s spirit and resolve were unshaken. She continued to campaign, advocate, and build a legacy that inspired many and reminded Ghanaians of the importance of resilience in the face of adversity.

Akua Donkor’s life and career were characterized by her unflinching dedication to the causes she believed in. She will be remembered not only as a politician but as a figure who consistently fought for the rights of the voiceless. Through her work with the Ghana Freedom Party, she amplified the voices of rural communities, highlighting issues that were often neglected by mainstream political discourse. Her fearless nature and dedication to her people remain a powerful legacy, inspiring future leaders who seek to bring about change from the grassroots level.

As the nation mourns the passing of this remarkable leader, Akua Donkor’s contributions to Ghana’s political landscape will continue to be remembered and celebrated. Her story stands as a reminder of the power of conviction and the impact of an individual who, against all odds, championed the cause of ordinary Ghanaians. Her legacy will endure as a testament to her belief in a Ghana where all voices matter, especially those of the grassroots.
