Popular Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, known widely as Mr. P and one half of the former music duo P-Square, has addressed recent allegations from his twin brother and ex-bandmate, Paul Okoye, also known as Rudeboy. Paul recently accused Peter and their former producer, Vampire, of stealing one of his songs.
The song in question, titled “Winning,” was allegedly written and performed by Rudeboy, with plans for it to be included in his upcoming album. However, Peter has since released the same song, sparking a public dispute between the siblings.
This controversy emerged after Paul shared his claims on social media, where he alleged that “Winning” was originally his work and that he had intended to release it as part of his new album next year. Paul expressed frustration upon learning that the track had been released by Peter, with the involvement of their former producer, Vampire, who he believed had been complicit in releasing the song under Mr. P’s name.
In response to these allegations, Peter took to Instagram to defend himself, clarifying that he had indeed been involved in the song’s creation from the start. According to Mr. P, “Winning” was not exclusively Paul’s work, but rather a collaborative effort between himself and another songwriter, Calypso60.
Peter explained that the song was co-written and composed by him and Calypso60, and produced by Vampire, with additional co-production by Goldswarm.
To emphasize his point, Mr. P made it clear that he could not be accused of stealing his own work. He said, “Person no dey thief him own Property! It is well!” expressing that the accusation of song theft was unfounded and hurtful.
He went on to express gratitude to Vampire for clarifying the song’s authorship and credits, saying, “Thank you, @iam_vampire_official, for the clarification.”
Peter further elaborated on his involvement in “Winning” by giving credit to everyone who contributed to the song’s production and success. He specifically acknowledged Calypso60, Vampire, and Goldswarm, ensuring that each of their roles in the song’s creation was properly recognized. He urged fans and followers to respect the work of all those involved, highlighting that their contributions were integral to the final version of “Winning.”
In his social media post, Mr. P also referenced an open letter he had written three months prior, in which he called for an end to ongoing negativity and feuding within his family and personal life. Reflecting on the need for peace and positivity, Peter pleaded with his twin brother to allow him the freedom to pursue his music without interference or accusations. His message was one of reconciliation, urging an end to what he described as “unnecessary distractions” and “negativity.”
He addressed his followers directly, asking for their support and encouraging them to enjoy the music without getting caught up in the controversy. “Now that I have a new single out, please allow me to enjoy my new single, WINNING, in peace. Enough of the negativity!” he wrote, urging fans to continue streaming “Winning” and to focus on the music itself, rather than the drama surrounding its release. “Winning” is currently available on all major music platforms, and Peter emphasized that he wanted to continue creating music in a positive environment, free from misunderstandings or public disputes.
This is not the first time the twin brothers have faced public disagreements since P-Square disbanded in 2017. The brothers’ relationship has been marked by periods of tension and estrangement, often leading to public speculation about their sibling rivalry. Over the years, fans have witnessed a series of disputes between the two, with each brother going on to establish separate music careers. Despite occasional attempts to reconcile, such as a brief reunion for their 40th birthday in 2021, their differences have continued to surface in the media.
In light of the current controversy, fans have expressed mixed reactions, with some showing support for Peter’s call for peace and others sympathizing with Paul’s frustration. Some fans have taken to social media to voice their disappointment over the ongoing disputes between the brothers, expressing a desire to see them resolve their differences and perhaps even collaborate again in the future. Many fans long for a return of the iconic P-Square duo, which dominated the Nigerian and African music scene for over a decade with hits like “No One Like You,” “Chop My Money,” and “Personally.”
However, Mr. P’s statement makes it clear that he remains focused on his own music and career path. His recent release, “Winning,” represents a continuation of his efforts to establish himself as a solo artist since the P-Square split. Peter’s emphasis on “winning” not only refers to the song title but also reflects his determination to succeed in the music industry despite the challenges posed by personal conflicts and public scrutiny.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains uncertain whether Peter and Paul will be able to fully reconcile their differences. The public, however, remains hopeful that the Okoye brothers can eventually find common ground and put aside the feuds that have characterized much of their relationship in recent years. For now, Peter’s message is one of optimism, encouraging everyone to rise above the distractions and focus on what matters most: the music and the joy it brings to their fans.
