The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set an ambitious target of winning between 28 to 30 parliamentary seats in the Eastern Region for the upcoming general elections. Currently holding 25 of the 33 constituencies in the region, the party is confident of gaining an additional three to five seats based on its developmental track record and consistent hard work over the years.
At a recent event in Kwahu-Abetifi, where the NPP organized a health walk dubbed the Final Walk, the General Secretary of the party, Justin Frempong Kodua, took the opportunity to motivate party members and supporters. He urged them to vote massively for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, emphasizing the importance of his leadership in continuing transformational policies such as the Free Senior High School (SHS) program.
Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, Justin Kodua highlighted the need for vigilance during the elections, especially against alleged plans by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to disrupt the process. He said, “We will wake up early in the morning to get to the polls on December 7 to vote. After the vote, we will stand at the appropriate place to wait for the counting to start. We have heard that NDC is plotting to tamper with the ballot box, but we will not allow them to do that. We will be very vigilant. Not only that, but we will not cause any chaos but go there in peace to vote in peace.”
Kodua’s remarks underscored the NPP’s commitment to a peaceful and transparent electoral process, while also reaffirming the party’s determination to protect the integrity of the vote.
In addition to Justin Kodua’s call to action, the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South Constituency, Samuel Attah Akyea, also addressed the gathering. He urged residents of the Eastern Region to ensure a resounding victory for the NPP in the parliamentary and presidential elections. Attah Akyea emphasized that winning a majority of seats in parliament is crucial for the NPP to effectively implement its policies and maintain dominance in the legislative arm of government.
“We need the majority in parliament, and Bagbin cannot determine the majority in parliament but you, Eastern Region,” he said, referring to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin. “So let’s put everything aside and vote for Bawumia. Let’s prevent skirt and blouse. They are saying that Ghana is difficult, but there are also economic crises in Western countries. By God’s grace, this is the first time we are getting an economist to lead us, so it’s up to you to choose Turkey over digitalization. Eastern Region will not vote for Mahama under any circumstances; we will vote for Bawumia, for we cherish our future.”
Attah Akyea’s passionate appeal resonated with the crowd, as he drew attention to the unique opportunity presented by having an economist like Dr. Bawumia as the NPP’s presidential candidate. He argued that Bawumia’s leadership represents a chance for Ghana to navigate economic challenges and leverage digitalization to create opportunities for all.
The Eastern Region, known as one of the NPP’s strongholds, has played a pivotal role in the party’s electoral success in past elections. With 25 out of the 33 constituencies currently under its control, the NPP’s goal of securing an additional three to five seats is seen as achievable. Party officials have been working tirelessly to engage voters, address their concerns, and reinforce their trust in the NPP’s ability to deliver on its promises.
During the health walk, participants expressed their confidence in the party’s chances of achieving its target. Many supporters highlighted the NPP’s record of developmental projects, including infrastructure development, educational reforms, and social intervention programs, as key reasons why they believe the party deserves another term in office.
The call for unity and a collective effort to secure victory was a recurring theme throughout the event. Speakers stressed the need for party members to avoid internal divisions and work together to achieve their common goal. They also urged voters to reject the practice of “skirt and blouse,” where voters support a presidential candidate from one party but choose parliamentary candidates from another.
The health walk, which brought together party faithful from various constituencies, served as both a fitness exercise and a rallying point for galvanizing support ahead of the elections. Participants carried banners and chanted slogans in support of Dr. Bawumia and the NPP, creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm and determination.
The NPP’s strategy in the Eastern Region is centered on its commitment to improving the lives of Ghanaians through sustainable development initiatives. Party leaders have consistently highlighted achievements such as the implementation of the Free SHS policy, which has provided access to education for thousands of students, as evidence of their dedication to the welfare of the people.
As the 2024 elections approach, the stakes are high for all political parties. For the NPP, the Eastern Region represents a crucial battleground where it hopes to consolidate its gains and expand its influence. The party’s leadership is confident that its message of progress and hope will resonate with voters, leading to a resounding victory on election day.
Dr. Bawumia, who has been campaigning across the country, has consistently emphasized the need for continuity in governance to sustain the gains made under the NPP administration. His vision for Ghana includes leveraging technology to drive economic transformation, creating jobs, and improving the standard of living for all citizens.
The NPP’s focus on the Eastern Region reflects its recognition of the region’s strategic importance in determining the outcome of the elections. With a combination of grassroots engagement, policy-driven campaigning, and a united front, the party is optimistic about achieving its target of winning between 28 to 30 parliamentary seats in the region.
As the countdown to December 7 continues, the NPP is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to secure victory. The party’s leadership and supporters remain steadfast in their commitment to ensuring that the Eastern Region plays a central role in delivering another term for the NPP and its presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
