Ghana’s Black Stars have dropped to 70th position in the latest FIFA World Ranking following a difficult September international break.
The latest rankings, released on Wednesday, October 7, saw Ghana fall five places from their previous position after a disappointing run of results during the month.
The drop comes after the Black Stars suffered defeats to Ivory Coast and The Gambia in their opening two matches of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Ghana entered the September international window hoping to make a strong start to the qualifying campaign, but the team struggled to produce the results expected of them. The back-to-back defeats have consequently affected the country’s position in the latest global rankings.
The Black Stars were also scheduled to face Morocco in an international friendly during the same period. However, the proposed encounter with the Atlas Lions, who are currently Africa’s highest-ranked national team, was cancelled.
The cancellation meant Ghana had fewer opportunities to recover from the poor start to the AFCON qualifying campaign during the international break.
The latest setback comes after the Black Stars had shown signs of improvement during their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in North America in June and July. Ghana’s performance at the tournament had provided renewed optimism around the national team, with supporters expecting the squad to build on that campaign heading into the AFCON qualifiers.
However, the team was unable to carry that momentum into the September fixtures.
The Black Stars also went into the qualifiers without some of the key players who had been part of the squad during the World Cup period. The absence of several experienced players affected the composition of the team as Ghana began its campaign for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
With the latest ranking, Ghana now sits 14th among African nations, behind Cape Verde, Burkina Faso and Tunisia, who are also outside the continent’s top 10.
Morocco continues to occupy the top spot in Africa, reflecting its strong position in international football. Senegal follows in second place, with Egypt, Algeria and Ivory Coast completing the top five on the continent.
Ghana’s position among African teams underlines the competitive nature of international football on the continent, with several countries continuing to improve their rankings through strong performances in World Cup and AFCON qualifying matches.
For the Black Stars, the immediate focus will now be on recovering from the September setbacks and improving their results in the next round of AFCON qualifying fixtures.
The team is scheduled to return to action in November when the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign continues.
The November matches will provide Ghana with an opportunity to respond on the pitch and improve its standing in the qualifying group, while also working towards restoring some of the confidence that followed the team’s World Cup campaign.
At the global level, Spain remain at the top of the FIFA rankings. The world champions are followed by Argentina, France, England and Portugal, who occupy the remaining positions in the top five.
Ghana’s fall to 70th position adds further pressure on the Black Stars ahead of their next international assignment. The team will need a strong response in November if it is to improve its position in the AFCON qualifiers and begin the process of rebuilding momentum.
For Ghanaian football supporters, the hope will be that the Black Stars can put the September results behind them and return to winning ways when competitive action resumes.
The team’s performance in the coming months will be important not only for qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations but also for maintaining the progress and confidence generated by the national team’s recent World Cup campaign.
