Coach Desmond Ofei Praises Ghana U20 After Hard-Fought Victory Over Central African Republic at CAF U20 AFCON

Substitute Joseph Opoku’s late winner sends Black Satellites into quarter-finals of 2025 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations

Ghana U20 head coach Desmond Ofei has applauded his players for their discipline, determination, and resilience following a narrow but vital 1-0 win over Central African Republic U20 in their final Group C fixture at the ongoing 2025 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.

The Black Satellites sealed their spot in the quarter-finals of the continental tournament after substitute Joseph Opoku produced a moment of magic in the 84th minute, breaking the deadlock and ensuring Ghana topped the group.

Though Ghana dominated the encounter for large spells, they struggled to convert their chances until Opoku’s stunning late strike lifted the pressure and sparked jubilant celebrations among the players and technical team.

Ofei Commends Team’s Discipline and Patience

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Coach Ofei highlighted the maturity his young players demonstrated throughout the match, particularly their ability to remain composed under pressure.

“We didn’t rush the game. That was very important,” Ofei said. “The boys controlled the game, worked the ball well, and stayed patient even when the goal didn’t come early. I’m happy for them — they earned this win.”

Ofei praised the tactical execution and the players’ ability to stay calm in a match that had high stakes. He also expressed satisfaction with the squad’s development as the tournament progresses.

“This was a big test of character,” he continued. “Matches like these make you stronger as a team. We are growing together, and I see a lot of positive signs going forward.”

Dominance Without Reward — Until the 84th Minute

From the onset, Ghana’s U20 side took control of the game, dictating possession and pressing high in search of an early goal. Midfield duo Abdulai Nortey and Emmanuel Essel pulled the strings in the center of the park, while wingers Evans Boakye and Ibrahim Osman kept the Central African defense on constant alert.

Despite their dominance, the Black Satellites struggled to find the breakthrough. The Central African Republic U20 side, aware that a draw could still give them a fighting chance of advancing, defended in deep blocks and frustrated the Ghanaian attack.

Ghana came close to scoring in the 60th minute when forward Peter Hammond’s curling shot from outside the box clipped the crossbar. Another chance followed in the 70th minute when Osman’s low drive forced a brilliant save from the Central African goalkeeper.

The breakthrough finally came in the 84th minute when Joseph Opoku, who had been introduced in the 75th minute, picked up a loose ball just outside the area. With quick footwork and a deft touch, he created space and unleashed a powerful strike that flew into the top corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance.

The goal proved decisive as Ghana held on to secure the 1-0 win and their place in the quarter-finals.

A Quarter-Final Place Secured — Eyes on the Trophy

With the victory, Ghana finished top of Group C with 7 points, following an earlier draw with Nigeria and a win against Niger. The result also means Ghana will avoid some of the tournament favorites in the next round, giving the team a strategic advantage.

The Black Satellites will now turn their attention to the quarter-finals, where they are set to face the second-placed team from Group A. The fixture is scheduled for Monday, May 13, at the Stade de Radès.

Coach Ofei emphasized that while the team is celebrating their progress, the hard work is far from over.

“We’ve achieved one of our goals — reaching the knockout stage — but we know the journey ahead will be even tougher,” he said. “We’ll take it one game at a time and continue to fight for Ghana.”

Opoku’s Hero Moment and Rising Stars to Watch

Joseph Opoku’s goal may have made headlines, but the performance of several players throughout the group stage has caught the attention of scouts and fans alike. Central defender Frank Amponsah has been rock-solid in defense, while goalkeeper Kofi Owusu’s command of his area and sharp reflexes have proven crucial.

Attacking midfielder Emmanuel Essel, who has featured in all three group matches, has been one of Ghana’s standout performers, showcasing vision, passing range, and creativity in the final third.

Opoku’s match-winning cameo has also raised expectations, with fans now eager to see more of the striker as the tournament heads into the knockout rounds.

“I just wanted to make an impact when I came on,” Opoku said in a post-match interview. “Coach told me to stay sharp and take my chance — and I did. I’m grateful for the opportunity.”

GFA, Fans and Former Stars Praise the Team

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) released a statement congratulating the team for reaching the quarter-finals and commending Coach Ofei’s leadership.

“This win is a testament to the talent and commitment of our young players,” the statement read. “The GFA is proud of the entire team and technical staff, and we pledge our continued support as they chase continental glory.”

Ghanaian football legends, including former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah and ex-U20 World Cup winner Andre Ayew, also took to social media to celebrate the result and encourage the team to aim higher.

“This is how champions are built — one hard game at a time,” Ayew posted on Instagram. “Keep going, Black Satellites!”

Looking Ahead

As Ghana prepares for their quarter-final showdown, optimism is growing among supporters that this group of players can replicate the achievements of their predecessors, including the historic 2009 FIFA U20 World Cup-winning side.

With tactical discipline, attacking flair, and a coach who believes in his squad, the Black Satellites appear ready to soar once more.
