David Raya Points to Premier League’s New Ball After Failing to Stop Szoboszlai’s Stunning Free-Kick in Arsenal’s Defeat to Liverpool

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has suggested that the new Premier League ball introduced this season played a role in his failure to stop Dominik Szoboszlai’s spectacular free-kick at Anfield on Sunday. The Spanish shot-stopper was left frustrated after being beaten from distance in a moment that proved decisive as Liverpool edged the Gunners to maintain their perfect start to the 2025/26 campaign.

The highly anticipated clash between two of England’s fiercest rivals lived up to expectations, producing end-to-end football and moments of brilliance. But it was Szoboszlai’s 83rd-minute strike, curled magnificently into the top corner from over 30 yards, that separated the sides and gave Jurgen Klopp’s men a crucial 1-0 victory. The result ensured that the defending champions remain at the summit of the Premier League table, while Arsenal’s search for their first title in two decades continues to face stern tests.

Raya, who has established himself as Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper under Mikel Arteta, was visibly dejected after the match. Speaking to Sky Sports, the Spain international admitted that he misjudged the movement of the ball in mid-air, attributing it to the new Puma-manufactured ball being used this season.

“I think it’s a hell of a strike,” Raya said, conceding the sheer quality of Szoboszlai’s effort. “I remember the ball moving a lot and moving away from me. With the new balls and everything, we still have to adapt. It’s going away from me so it’s harder to gauge and save it.”

The goalkeeper went on to explain that adapting to the Premier League’s change from Nike to Puma balls has not been straightforward for shot-stoppers across the league.

“It is different to the Nike ball so we have to adapt to it. The grip is different, the kick is different,” Raya added. “We just have to adapt after playing with the Nike ball for many years. It’s the same for everybody.”

A Familiar Challenge for Goalkeepers

While Raya’s comments drew sympathy from some quarters, others argued that adapting to new equipment is part of the job at the highest level. Goalkeepers often face challenges when football manufacturers introduce new designs, especially as aerodynamics, weight distribution, and grip technology continue to evolve. Even slight changes can alter how the ball travels in the air, creating uncertainty during free-kicks and long-range strikes.

Szoboszlai’s free-kick showcased exactly that unpredictability. The Hungarian midfielder, who has been in fine form since joining Liverpool, struck the ball with venom and accuracy. As it soared over Arsenal’s defensive wall, the unpredictable swerve and dip left Raya diving late, with the net bulging to the delight of the Anfield faithful.

For Liverpool, it was another statement of intent. The Reds have now secured maximum points from their opening fixtures, underlining their determination to defend the Premier League title. Klopp, speaking after the game, praised Szoboszlai’s technique and described the free-kick as “world-class.”

Arsenal’s Frustration Continues

For Arsenal, however, the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow. Having finished runners-up in each of the past three seasons—twice behind Manchester City and once behind Liverpool—the Gunners entered this campaign with renewed determination to finally break their title drought. But setbacks against direct rivals could once again prove costly in a race where fine margins matter.

Arteta defended his goalkeeper but admitted the team must find ways to be more clinical in front of goal. Arsenal created several chances but were unable to convert, leaving themselves vulnerable to a late sucker punch.

“We had our moments and we should have taken them,” Arteta said in his post-match interview. “At this level, you can’t afford not to score, especially here at Anfield. David is disappointed, of course, but these things happen in football. Szoboszlai hit a fantastic strike.”

Title Race Already Heating Up

Though the season is still in its early stages, the result already feels significant. Liverpool’s victory keeps them clear at the top, while Manchester City, Chelsea, and Tottenham are also in close pursuit. Arsenal, meanwhile, are under pressure to bounce back quickly if they are to avoid slipping behind their rivals in the title chase.

Raya, for his part, remains determined to adapt and improve. Despite the criticism, his performances since arriving at Arsenal have generally been solid, and his shot-stopping ability has been crucial in many key games. “We just have to adapt after playing with the Nike ball for many years,” he reiterated. “It’s the same for everybody.”

The goalkeeper’s comments highlight an interesting subplot for the season ahead—how players, especially goalkeepers, adjust to the Premier League’s switch in ball supplier. With the Puma ball’s design promising “enhanced speed and precision,” strikers could have an edge, while goalkeepers may need time to catch up.

Looking Ahead

Arsenal’s focus now shifts to their upcoming fixtures, where they will look to rediscover their rhythm. With matches against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa on the horizon, Arteta’s men have an opportunity to quickly get back on track. Raya, in particular, will be keen to prove his resilience and silence critics by delivering commanding performances between the posts.

Liverpool, on the other hand, march on with growing confidence. Their ability to grind out results, even when not at their absolute best, is a hallmark of champions. With Szoboszlai emerging as a key figure alongside Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez, the Reds appear well-equipped to mount yet another serious challenge for silverware.

For Raya and Arsenal, the lesson from Anfield is clear: in a league of fine margins, adapting swiftly—whether to new balls, new opponents, or new challenges—can make the difference between falling short and lifting the trophy.
