In a stirring declaration that has sparked conversation across Nigeria’s political and entertainment spheres, former Senator for Bayelsa East, Ben Murray-Bruce, has predicted that globally acclaimed Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke — popularly known as Davido — will one day occupy the office of Governor of Osun State.
Speaking during a recent episode of his widely followed Common Sense series, the media mogul and politician expressed unwavering confidence in Davido’s future in politics, citing his strong family legacy and growing political awareness.
Adeleke Dynasty and Political Legacy
“David Adeleke, the global phenomenon better known as Davido, is undeniably an international artist and a true Nigerian superstar,” Murray-Bruce began. “He stands as one of Nigeria’s most valuable cultural exports. However, beneath the surface of this music icon lies a side that many may not be aware of.”
The former senator highlighted the political pedigree of the Adeleke family, pointing to Davido’s deep-rooted connection to Osun State’s leadership. “He is, by his own admission, a political animal with deeply held views and a clear-cut political ideology. This revelation, which came to light through a personal discussion, perhaps shouldn’t be entirely surprising when you consider the DNA of the Adeleke family,” he added.
Senator Ademola Adeleke, Davido’s uncle, is the current Governor of Osun State, having won the seat under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform. Another of Davido’s uncles, the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke, made history as the first civilian Governor of Osun State in 1992 during the Ibrahim Babangida-led military regime.
“Davido, If You Run, I Predict You Will Win” – Murray-Bruce
Murray-Bruce emphasized that Davido’s potential entry into politics is not a far-fetched idea, considering his immense popularity, influence across demographics, and growing civic engagement. “Considering all of these, the thought that Davido himself could one day aspire to become the Governor of Osun State seems more like a potential trajectory, especially if his political inclinations are nurtured and strategically channelled,” he stated.
He also underscored the rising need for entertainers and influencers to step into public service roles, particularly in Nigeria, where a fresh wave of political consciousness among youths is demanding new faces and approaches.
“Here in Nigeria, there is a growing sentiment that more entertainers should consider seeking political positions. Their ability to connect with the different demographics could inject fresh perspectives and dynamism into the political landscape,” Murray-Bruce asserted. “Davido, if you run, I predict you will win.”
Davido’s Political Leanings and Public Service Interest
Although Davido has not formally declared any political ambition, he has been an active political voice in Nigeria, often using his massive social media following to advocate for democratic participation, youth empowerment, and social justice.
During the 2023 general elections, Davido notably supported his uncle’s gubernatorial campaign, actively participating in rallies and mobilizing young voters. He has also publicly criticized governance failures and endorsed political reform through his online platforms.
His 2021 performance at the #EndSARS protests further cemented his reputation as an entertainer who isn’t afraid to speak truth to power. This civic involvement, coupled with his family’s legacy, lends credibility to Murray-Bruce’s prediction.
A Broader Call for Celebrity Participation in Governance
Ben Murray-Bruce, a former Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and founder of Silverbird Group, has long advocated for youth and celebrity participation in governance. He believes that popular figures, especially those with a positive image and large followings, can help transform Nigeria’s political landscape.
In his Common Sense commentary, he reiterated that the status quo can no longer deliver the aspirations of a younger, more informed generation of Nigerians.
“The political space needs new voices. People who understand the modern world, who can connect with the grassroots, and who are not bound by the traditional political machinery,” he said. “If someone like Davido chooses to run, not only does he stand a good chance at winning, but he may also inspire a whole generation to take governance seriously.”
Public Reactions and Speculations Begin
Following the release of the Common Sense episode, social media platforms lit up with reactions, as Nigerians weighed in on the prospect of Davido becoming a state governor. While some praised the idea as a refreshing possibility, others questioned whether fame and fortune were enough qualifications for public office.
A Twitter user wrote, “Davido for Governor? Sounds crazy, but this is Nigeria — and honestly, it might just work. He’s loved, and he has the resources. Why not?”
Another user cautioned, “Let’s not confuse celebrity status with leadership capacity. Running a state is not like running a music label.”
Nonetheless, many supporters argue that Davido’s philanthropic record, including his notable donations to orphanages across Nigeria and support for educational causes, shows that he is more than just a performer.
Davido Yet to Respond Publicly
As of press time, Davido has not publicly responded to Murray-Bruce’s remarks. However, the buzz generated by the statement may eventually prompt a reaction from the “Timeless” singer, whose influence continues to grow both at home and abroad.
While it remains speculative whether Davido will seriously consider a political career, Murray-Bruce’s prediction has reignited conversations around youth leadership, celebrity influence, and the evolving face of Nigerian politics.
