Diddy transferred to low-security federal prison in New Jersey to serve sentence

American music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has officially begun serving his 50-month federal prison sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Fort Dix in New Jersey, marking a significant development in one of the most high-profile celebrity legal cases in recent years.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, Combs’ transfer was completed earlier this week from the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, where he had been held since his arrest in September 2024. The 54-year-old entrepreneur and Grammy-winning artist was convicted on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, charges that stemmed from a lengthy federal investigation into his alleged involvement in a network of illicit activities connected to his entertainment empire.

Sources close to the case revealed that Combs personally requested to serve his term at Fort Dix, a low-security federal facility located in Burlington County, New Jersey. The institution, which houses approximately 2,800 inmates, is known for its rehabilitation-focused environment and offers various educational and vocational programs.

The decision to place Combs at Fort Dix, according to legal analysts, reflects both his good behaviour while in detention and his eligibility to participate in the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP) — a key factor that could potentially reduce his sentence. Participation in RDAP can earn inmates up to one year of sentence reduction upon successful completion.

With credit for the 13 months already served during pre-trial and post-conviction detention, and possible reductions from the treatment program, Combs’ projected release date is May 8, 2028, according to the Bureau of Prisons database.

While serving his time, the hip-hop mogul will be permitted limited visitation rights and access to the facility’s commissary, where inmates can purchase basic goods and snacks. The commissary at Fort Dix lists items such as rice cakes ($5.75), white tuna ($3.75), and Pop-Tarts ($2.85). Interestingly, inmates have joked about the absence of applesauce on the menu — a favourite snack Combs was once known to enjoy on cheeseburgers, a quirky habit that became a pop culture talking point during his early career.

Fort Dix has a history of housing well-known personalities. Among its former inmates is Joe Giudice, the reality television star from The Real Housewives of New Jersey, who served time for fraud-related offences. The facility is characterized by dormitory-style housing, communal dining, and open recreation areas — a stark contrast to the harsher confinement conditions of maximum-security prisons.

Legal experts have noted that Combs’ placement at a low-security prison could also serve as a strategic step by his defence team as they prepare to appeal both his conviction and sentence. His attorneys have filed an expedited motion for review with the U.S. Court of Appeals, arguing that key elements of the prosecution’s evidence were obtained in violation of his constitutional rights. The outcome of the appeal could potentially alter the length or nature of his sentence, though such processes are often lengthy and uncertain.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Combs Global brand — the umbrella company that oversees Diddy’s business ventures, including Bad Boy Entertainment, Sean John, and REVOLT Media — issued a brief statement reaffirming the mogul’s resilience and commitment to clearing his name. The statement read, “Mr. Combs remains strong, focused, and in good health. He continues to maintain his innocence and is optimistic that justice will ultimately prevail.”

Adding another layer of intrigue, former U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed in a recent media interview that Diddy had formally submitted a request for a presidential pardon prior to the end of Trump’s term. Although the request remains under review, political observers suggest that the decision could become a point of public debate, given Combs’ longstanding influence in the entertainment and social justice spheres.

Throughout his decades-long career, Sean Combs has been regarded as one of the most influential figures in hip-hop culture and business. From his early beginnings as an intern at Uptown Records to building a billion-dollar brand empire, his name has been synonymous with innovation, style, and controversy. However, the recent legal battles have significantly altered his public image, casting a shadow over his previous philanthropic and entrepreneurial achievements.

Industry insiders note that despite his incarceration, Combs’ business interests are expected to continue operating under delegated management. Several of his entertainment and fashion ventures remain active, though his leadership absence is anticipated to impact decision-making across multiple projects.

Fans and supporters have taken to social media to express mixed emotions over the latest development. While some have shared messages of encouragement using the hashtag #FreeDiddy, others have emphasized the importance of accountability and justice, noting that the verdict serves as a reminder that fame does not place anyone above the law.

Cultural commentators also point out that Combs’ imprisonment could influence broader discussions on celebrity power, ethics, and the responsibility that comes with influence in the entertainment industry. His case has reignited debates about the intersection between art, personal conduct, and legal scrutiny in modern America.

For now, Sean “Diddy” Combs begins a new chapter of his life behind the walls of Fort Dix — a far cry from the luxurious lifestyle he once showcased in music videos and reality television. Despite the sharp contrast, those close to him describe his current mindset as “focused and reflective.”

As his legal battles continue to unfold and his appeal moves through the courts, the world will be watching closely to see whether the man once hailed as “Hip-Hop’s Ultimate Mogul” can rebuild his legacy or whether this chapter will define his career’s closing years.
