The Ghana Police Service has failed to attend a mediation hearing convened by the Right to Information Commission (RTI) on March 10, 2025. The hearing aimed to address multiple complaints filed by William Kofi Yirenkyi, Founder and Leader of the Alliance for Restoration of Civil Rights, against the Ghana Police Service.
According to William Kofi Yirenkyi, the Inspector General of Police and his representatives did not show up, demonstrating their refusal to abide by the RTI Commission’s directive.
‘We came here today for the hearing that the Right to Information Commission requested us to have with the Inspector General of Police, but when we arrived, neither he nor his representatives showed up. This continues to demonstrate that the IGP refuses to abide by the directives of the RTI Commission,” he
stated.
Mr. Yirenkyi cautioned the Inspector General of Police, stating that they want him to do his job and are not after him, but will take further action if he continues to deny them their right to information.
The RTI Commission has scheduled the mediation hearing to facilitate negotiations over three pending requests for information submitted by William Kofi Yirenkyi.
The RTI Commission, after deliberations, instructed Yirenkyi to submit a written petition detailing the exact nature of the information being requested.
The Commission also assured him that it would write to the Inspector General of Police to demand an explanation for the police’s absence at the hearing and to facilitate the release of the requested information.
He emphasized that they are citizens exercising their rights and want the Inspector General of Police to help unravel misconduct within the Ghana Police Service. He also mentioned that they have three police investigation and arrest reports including two armed robbery cases and one arrest report yet to be addressed.
An arrest report regarding his own detention and subsequent release, for which he seeks clarification on why the charges were dropped.
The Alliance for Restoration of Civil Rights has condemned the Ghana Police Service’s actions, describing them as an abuse of power that undermines democratic rights.
