Ghana:NDC Greater Accra Caucus Condemns Targeted Harassment of McDan CEO Dr. Daniel McKorley

The Greater Accra Regional Constituency Organizers Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned what it calls an ongoing campaign of harassment and intimidation against prominent Ghanaian business mogul, Dr. Daniel McKorley, Chief Executive Officer of the McDan Group of Companies.

At a press briefing held in Accra on Friday, May 9, 2025, the caucus accused certain government officials and agencies of unfairly targeting McKorley and other indigenous business leaders under the guise of investigations and public scrutiny. The group expressed deep concern over what it described as politically motivated interference aimed at silencing and weakening local entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurship Under Siege

Delivering a statement on behalf of the caucus, Deputy Secretary Mr. Eliis Amartei emphasized that the McDan Group, under the leadership of Dr. McKorley, has made substantial contributions to Ghana’s economic development, especially in the area of employment generation and logistics infrastructure.

“These entrepreneurs are not just business owners; they are national assets,” Amartei asserted. “Dr. McKorley and his companies have been instrumental in providing decent jobs for thousands of Ghanaian youth across multiple sectors. It is unfortunate and deeply troubling that he is being vilified despite his patriotic efforts.”

He went on to suggest that certain individuals in government are using state institutions as tools of suppression, pursuing personal vendettas under the pretense of accountability.

A Threat to Economic Development

The caucus argued that the ongoing attacks on Dr. McKorley are inconsistent with the government’s own vision of building a resilient and inclusive 24-hour economy—one of the key pillars of the NDC’s development agenda.

“How can we talk about a 24-hour economy if the very people capable of driving that agenda are being subjected to targeted harassment?” Amartei questioned. “We need to support and not sabotage Ghanaian entrepreneurs who are doing everything within their power to uplift the nation’s economy.”

He further stressed that the current environment of fear and mistrust discourages private sector investment, ultimately weakening the national economy and derailing Ghana’s development trajectory.

Call for Presidential Intervention

The caucus has called on His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama to step in and ensure that fairness, transparency, and respect for due process are upheld in all dealings involving Ghanaian businesspeople.

“We believe in the President’s commitment to justice and equitable economic development,” Amartei stated. “It is our hope that he will act swiftly to put an end to what we view as abuse of power by some state actors.”

The group claimed that investigations into McDan’s operations lack merit and are being weaponized to tarnish the reputation of a reputable and hardworking entrepreneur.

“We are not against lawful scrutiny,” Amartei clarified. “But when investigations become tools for character assassination and economic sabotage, then we have a serious problem as a nation.”

Public Sentiment and Support

In recent weeks, there has been growing public concern over the treatment of Dr. McKorley, with many Ghanaians taking to social media to voice their support for the McDan CEO. Supporters argue that his philanthropic contributions, including support for education, sports, and youth development, have made him a beacon of hope for many.

Several industry stakeholders have also lauded McKorley for his leadership and commitment to the growth of local enterprises. His McDan Shipping Company is widely regarded as a leading player in Ghana’s logistics and freight forwarding industry, with international partnerships and a strong workforce.

A Broader Pattern?

The NDC caucus warned that the situation involving Dr. McKorley may be part of a broader trend aimed at silencing business leaders perceived to be politically neutral or critical of the ruling class.

“We are noticing a pattern,” Amartei said. “From tax audits to regulatory pressure and media smear campaigns, it appears some forces are deliberately trying to cripple Ghanaian-owned businesses. This must stop.”

He urged civil society organizations, the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), and other advocacy groups to speak out against any form of economic victimization that undermines national unity and progress.

Commitment to Private Sector Growth

The caucus reaffirmed the NDC’s unwavering commitment to empowering local businesses and fostering a conducive environment for entrepreneurship. It emphasized that Ghana’s future depends heavily on strategic partnerships between the public and private sectors.

“We must protect our own,” Amartei said. “No country thrives when its most innovative minds and hardworking citizens are being persecuted for political reasons.”

Conclusion

As the McDan controversy continues to gain national attention, the NDC’s Greater Accra Regional Constituency Organizers Caucus has positioned itself as a vocal defender of Ghanaian entrepreneurship, urging the government to uphold justice and shield its citizens from politically motivated attacks.

“Our party stands for progress, inclusiveness, and the economic empowerment of all Ghanaians,” Amartei concluded. “Let us not destroy those who are building the very future we all hope to see.”
