Ghana’s Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang Begins Medical Leave Amid Health Concerns

Government officials assure the nation of her steady recovery as she temporarily steps back from duties

Accra, Ghana – April 7, 2025Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has officially commenced a three-week medical leave effective Monday, April 7, 2025. The leave, which was recommended by her medical team, is intended to allow the Vice President to focus on rest and recovery following recent health challenges.

Sources within Jubilee House confirmed the development over the weekend, stating that the decision was made in consultation with her doctors, who advised a temporary withdrawal from public engagements to ensure full recuperation. The Vice President had initially sought medical attention at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra before being transferred abroad for further specialized care.

This marks the first extended medical leave for Prof. Opoku-Agyemang since assuming the role of Vice President, and it has generated considerable public interest and concern. Her absence, however, is not expected to disrupt the operations of government, according to senior officials.

Assurances from Government Officials

Speaking during a community outreach event in Lagos, Nigeria, on Sunday, April 6, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, sought to allay public fears about the Vice President’s condition.

“Professor Opoku-Agyemang is recovering well and responding positively to treatment,” Ablakwa said. “She is in excellent hands, and we are optimistic she will return to her official duties reinvigorated and in full health.”

He also extended heartfelt gratitude to the Ghanaian public and diaspora communities for their continued support and well-wishes, attributing the Vice President’s steady progress to the goodwill and prayers from citizens across the globe.

“The Vice President and her family have been deeply touched by the outpouring of love and solidarity. It reminds us of the unity and compassion that define the Ghanaian spirit,” Ablakwa added.

Addressing Public Speculation and Rumors

In the wake of the announcement, social media platforms and local radio discussions have seen a surge in speculation surrounding the Vice President’s health. Some fringe voices have raised unverified claims, prompting a swift rebuttal from government officials.

Ablakwa strongly condemned what he described as “vicious and unGhanaian propaganda,” emphasizing that such rhetoric does not reflect the values of empathy and respect that are central to Ghana’s democratic culture.

“It is unfortunate that some individuals would use this moment to sow discord or spread misinformation. We urge the public to disregard such narratives and instead celebrate the Vice President’s resilience and lifelong contributions to national development,” he said.

A Trailblazer in Ghanaian Politics

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, a respected academic and the first woman to serve as Ghana’s Vice President, has long been hailed as a pioneer in national leadership. Her ascent to one of the highest offices in the land has served as a powerful symbol of progress and gender inclusion in Ghana’s political landscape.

Before entering politics, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast and later as Minister for Education. Her appointment as Vice President was widely lauded by gender equality advocates and civil society organizations, who recognized her as a role model for young girls and aspiring women leaders across the continent.

Minister Ablakwa reinforced this view during his remarks, describing the Vice President as “a beacon of hope for the next generation.”

“She has broken barriers and opened doors that were once closed to women,” he stated. “Her legacy is already cemented in history, and her current health journey only underscores her strength and courage.”

Ongoing Duties of Government

Despite her temporary absence, the government has assured the public that all administrative and executive functions remain fully operational. President John Dramani Mahama, who appointed Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate in the last election, is expected to oversee key national responsibilities in her stead during the leave period.

According to Jubilee House insiders, contingency plans have been activated to ensure that state protocols, diplomatic engagements, and ongoing policy initiatives continue seamlessly. Ministers and senior aides have been directed to maintain close coordination and ensure continuity in government business.

“The machinery of governance is designed to adapt in such situations,” one senior government official told reporters. “The Vice President’s health is a top priority, and so is the uninterrupted delivery of service to the Ghanaian people.”

Public Support and Well-Wishes

Since the announcement of her medical leave, public figures, religious leaders, and citizens from various sectors have taken to social media and other platforms to share messages of encouragement and support for the Vice President. The hashtag #GetWellNaana has begun trending on Ghanaian Twitter, with tributes pouring in from local personalities and international allies alike.

Among those who sent public messages were former President John Kufuor, actress Lydia Forson, and global education advocate Dr. Patrick Awuah, each praising the Vice President’s contributions to education, leadership, and national progress.

“She has been a steady voice of wisdom and a pillar of academic excellence. We wish her a full and swift recovery,” Dr. Awuah wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Looking Ahead

While details regarding the exact nature of Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s health issues remain private, her team has assured the public that regular updates will be provided through official channels. Her return to public duty is tentatively scheduled for late April, pending final clearance from her doctors.

In the meantime, Ghanaians are encouraged to continue offering their prayers and support, as the nation collectively looks forward to welcoming its Vice President back with renewed strength and energy.
