Government Releases GH¢76 Million for Black Stars’ World Cup Campaign

The Government of Ghana has released more than GH¢76 million to support the Black Stars’ participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, underlining its commitment to ensuring the national team is adequately prepared for football’s biggest stage.

The financial package, announced in a statement on Friday, provides a major boost to Ghana’s preparations ahead of the country’s opening match of the tournament, which is being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

According to the statement, the Ministry of Finance has authorised the release of GH¢76,466,919.20 to cover various aspects of the Black Stars’ World Cup campaign, including preparations, participation in the group stage and the settlement of outstanding qualification bonuses owed to players and officials.

The government explained that the funds have been released in two separate allocations to address the immediate needs of the team while also fulfilling financial commitments made during the qualification process.

A substantial portion of the amount, GH¢58,929,500.00, representing the cedi equivalent of US$5 million, has been released as an advance payment to facilitate the Black Stars’ preparations and participation in the group stage of the tournament.

The funding is expected to cover accommodation, logistics, transportation, training requirements and other operational expenses associated with Ghana’s campaign at the World Cup.

Government officials noted that the early release of the funds demonstrates a strong commitment to ensuring that the players, technical team and management have the necessary resources to focus fully on the task ahead without financial distractions.

The statement indicated that providing the funds in advance would help create a conducive environment for the team to prepare effectively and compete at the highest level against some of the world’s best footballing nations.

In addition to the advance payment for the tournament, the government has approved the release of GH¢17,537,419.20, equivalent to US$1.488 million, to settle outstanding qualification bonuses due to players and officials.

The payment fulfils an agreement reached during Ghana’s qualification campaign for the World Cup. Under the arrangement, players and officials received 50 per cent of their qualification bonuses during the qualifying series, with the remaining balance becoming payable once the team successfully secured a place at the tournament.

The settlement of the outstanding bonuses is expected to further boost morale within the camp as the Black Stars prepare to represent Ghana on the global stage.

Over the years, issues surrounding unpaid bonuses and delayed financial obligations have occasionally affected national team preparations. However, the government’s latest move appears aimed at eliminating such concerns and ensuring the team remains focused solely on football matters.

The Black Stars recently wrapped up an intensive pre-tournament training camp in Washington, D.C., where players and technical staff spent several days fine-tuning strategies and building momentum ahead of the competition.

The camp provided an opportunity for head coach Carlos Queiroz and his technical team to assess player fitness levels, work on tactical plans and strengthen team chemistry before the start of the tournament.

Following the conclusion of the training camp, the team travelled to Providence, Rhode Island, where they will complete the final phase of preparations before beginning their World Cup journey.

Expectations among Ghanaian football fans remain high as the Black Stars prepare for another appearance at the FIFA World Cup, a competition that continues to capture the imagination of millions around the globe.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L and faces a challenging route to the knockout stage.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama in Toronto on June 17 in what is expected to be a crucial opening fixture. A positive result could provide the momentum needed for the remainder of the group stage.

Ghana’s second match will be against England in Boston on June 23. The encounter is expected to attract significant global attention, given the history between the two footballing nations and the quality of talent on display.

The Black Stars will then conclude their group-stage campaign against Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27. Depending on earlier results, the match could prove decisive in determining qualification to the next round of the tournament.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup represents another important chapter in Ghana’s football history.

The Black Stars are making their fifth appearance at the global tournament, having previously participated in Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014 and Qatar 2022.

Among those appearances, Ghana’s most memorable World Cup campaign came in South Africa in 2010 when the team reached the quarter-finals and captured the admiration of football fans across the world.

That historic run saw the Black Stars come within a penalty shootout of becoming the first African nation to reach a FIFA World Cup semi-final, a feat that remains one of the continent’s greatest achievements in international football.

As the team prepares for another attempt at making history, government officials have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting not only the Black Stars but the broader development of sports in Ghana.

The statement expressed confidence that the timely release of funds would enable players and officials to concentrate fully on their mission of representing the nation with pride and determination.

Government also called on Ghanaians both at home and abroad to rally behind the national team throughout the tournament, stressing that the support of the nation could serve as an important source of motivation for the players.

With preparations entering their final stages and financial commitments now addressed, attention turns to the pitch, where the Black Stars will seek to make a strong impression and carry the hopes of millions of Ghanaians into another memorable World Cup campaign.
