Governor Adeleke Assures Non-Interference in Osun Local Government Elections

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and credible local government election scheduled for February 22, 2025. He has assured all stakeholders that his administration will not interfere in the electoral process, emphasizing that the state government remains neutral in the exercise.

His pledge comes as political parties intensify their campaigns ahead of the elections, which will determine the next set of council chairmen and councilors across the state.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Wednesday, the governor commended the peaceful conduct of political parties during their campaigns. He urged candidates to focus on presenting their agenda to the electorate rather than engaging in acts of violence or intimidation. Adeleke stressed that the people of Osun State deserve a transparent and democratic process where they can freely choose their representatives without fear or coercion.

“As a government, we are committed to free and fair elections. We have followed the preparatory activities of the state electoral commission, and we assure the public that we respect the independence of the commission to conduct credible elections,” the statement read. He further highlighted the high level of literacy among Osun residents, stating that the people of the state are well-informed and cannot be deceived by misinformation or political propaganda.

“Our literacy level is at an all-time high. This is not a state where residents can be lied to. They read and digest court rulings and political subjects without being hoodwinked. I urge our people to get prepared for February 22. It is an opportunity to vote for your preferred council chairmen and councilors,” the governor stated. He emphasized the need for citizens to actively participate in the democratic process by coming out to vote peacefully and making their voices heard.

Governor Adeleke also used the opportunity to caution against the spread of fake news, especially concerning legal matters related to the elections. He noted that misinformation about court rulings and political developments could create unnecessary tension and disrupt the electoral process. “We are a nation governed by law. The judiciary, like it has been said recently, is the harbinger of hope. We must avoid misrepresentation and misinformation about court processes. We have a sacred duty to avoid fake news. It is an offence punishable under the law,” he warned.

Expressing concern over intelligence reports indicating that some elements within the opposition were allegedly planning to instigate violence in the state, Adeleke issued a stern warning to those involved. He made it clear that his administration would not tolerate any attempt to disrupt the peace and stability of Osun State. “We have credible reports of plots by elements within the opposition to foment crisis in Osun State. I warn those plotting such evil to desist because of its grave consequences,” he cautioned.

As the Chief Security Officer of the state, the governor assured residents that adequate security measures had been put in place to prevent any form of violence before, during, and after the election. He revealed that he had directed security agencies to take decisive action against anyone attempting to disrupt the electoral process, ensuring that law and order were maintained at all times. “As the Chief Security Officer of this state, I have directed security agencies to deal decisively with any promoter of violence within the context of rule of law. We will not allow this state to be plunged into a baseless conflict,” he affirmed.

Governor Adeleke reiterated that democracy is about the ballot box, not violence. He encouraged all eligible voters to go to the polls on February 22 and make their choices peacefully. “Democracy is about ballot papers, not guns and cutlass. Go to the poll on the 22nd. Make your preference known in peaceful manners. Osun is a bastion of democracy. We are ready as we have the capacity to defend our democratic heritage,” the governor noted.

As the election date approaches, there is growing anticipation across the state, with political parties and candidates intensifying their efforts to secure the support of voters. Adeleke’s assurance of non-interference aims to boost public confidence in the process, ensuring that the election is conducted in a manner that reflects the true will of the people.

The governor’s message has been well-received by various stakeholders, including civil society organizations and electoral observers, who have called for all parties to adhere to democratic principles and avoid actions that could undermine the credibility of the election. His administration has continued to engage with security agencies and the electoral commission to guarantee a smooth and transparent process.

The February 22 election is seen as a critical test for the state’s democratic institutions, and all eyes will be on Osun as it conducts one of its most anticipated local government polls in recent years. With Adeleke’s firm stance on non-interference and his commitment to upholding democratic values, expectations are high that the election will be conducted peacefully and fairly. However, the ultimate responsibility lies with the electorate, political parties, and security agencies to ensure that the process is free of violence and manipulation.

As residents prepare to cast their votes, the focus remains on maintaining peace and ensuring that the electoral process is conducted in a manner that strengthens democracy in Osun State. Governor Adeleke’s reassurances reflect his administration’s commitment to allowing the people to exercise their right to vote without fear, intimidation, or undue influence. The success of the election will not only set a positive precedent for future polls in the state but also reinforce the credibility of the democratic system in Nigeria as a whole.
