Hollywood Comes to Lagos as Meagan Good and Jonathan Majors Embrace African Cinema at AFRIFF 2026

Lagos has welcomed a touch of Hollywood glamour as American actors Meagan Good and Jonathan Majors arrive in Nigeria for the 2026 Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), bringing renewed international attention to the growing influence of African cinema.

The Hollywood couple joined filmmakers, actors, producers and other creative professionals from across the world for the 15th edition of the Africa International Film Festival, which officially opened in Lagos on November 1 and will run until November 7.

Their presence at the festival represents another important moment in the growing relationship between African filmmakers and the international film industry, particularly at a time when African storytelling is attracting increasing interest beyond the continent.

For Good and Majors, the visit is not simply about attending a major entertainment gathering. It also presents an opportunity to engage with African creatives, explore possible collaborations and support the development of the continent’s film industry.

Speaking to the media upon their arrival, Jonathan Majors indicated that he and his wife were motivated to attend after receiving an invitation from a friend. He explained that they were interested in supporting the film and cinema industry while exploring opportunities for collaboration.

The actor also pointed to the changing relationship between Africa and its diaspora, suggesting that the movement towards stronger connections was creating opportunities for creatives on both sides to work together.

Their participation adds an international dimension to this year’s festival, which continues to provide a meeting point for African and international film professionals to exchange ideas, showcase productions and build relationships that could translate into future projects.

Meagan Good, known for her work in film and television, is also expected to participate in a fireside conversation titled The Art of Becoming: Craft, Identity and Reinvention during the Africa Film and Content Market.

The session is expected to explore issues surrounding personal growth, creative identity and the experiences that shape careers in the entertainment industry.

Her participation provides an opportunity for African actors, filmmakers and other industry professionals to engage with an international personality whose career spans several years in Hollywood.

Jonathan Majors, meanwhile, brings his experience in film and television to the gathering. He has featured in productions including The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Da 5 Bloods, Lovecraft Country and Creed III, among other projects.

His presence at AFRIFF further strengthens the festival’s international profile and creates opportunities for conversations around the future of filmmaking, creative partnerships and the movement of talent across borders.

However, the Hollywood couple are not the only international personalities attracting attention at this year’s festival.

Beninese-American actor Djimon Hounsou is also among the major international guests, having been named guest of honour for the 2026 edition.

Hounsou, who has built an extensive career in international cinema, is expected to present his short film Calabash and participate in a panel discussion focusing on how African stories can be positioned for wider international audiences.

His involvement carries particular significance given his experience navigating the global film industry and his connection to African heritage.

The presence of Hounsou, Good and Majors reflects the growing interest in creating stronger connections between Hollywood and Africa’s entertainment industry.

Beyond the international guests, the festival has also attracted prominent Nollywood personalities, including Rita Dominic, Wale Ojo, Osas Ighodaro, Juliet Ibrahim and other entertainment figures.

Their participation highlights the importance of local talent in shaping the identity and direction of African cinema.

Rita Dominic is also connected to this year’s festival through her film, The Spectacular Death of Prisca, which has been selected for screening.

The 2026 edition is being held under the theme, “Frames of the Future: Africa’s Creative Intelligence”, reflecting the festival’s focus on the continent’s creative potential and the opportunities available to African filmmakers in an increasingly connected global entertainment industry.

The programme includes film screenings, masterclasses, industry discussions and networking sessions designed to bring together established filmmakers and emerging talents.

A major feature is the Africa Film and Content Market, which provides a platform for industry professionals to discuss business opportunities, explore partnerships and consider ways of improving the production, distribution and international reach of African films.

The market is expected to encourage meaningful engagement between African creatives and international stakeholders, particularly in areas such as film financing, content distribution, production partnerships and access to global audiences.

Founded by Chioma Ude in 2010, AFRIFF has grown into an important annual gathering for filmmakers and entertainment professionals interested in African storytelling.

Over the years, the festival has provided opportunities for filmmakers to present their work, engage with audiences and connect with professionals who can support the development of their careers.

Its continued presence in Lagos also reinforces Nigeria’s position as one of Africa’s major entertainment centres, with Nollywood playing an important role in the continent’s film and television industry.

The arrival of international personalities such as Good, Majors and Hounsou adds visibility to that effort, but the bigger conversation remains how such engagements can translate into lasting benefits for African filmmakers.

For many industry professionals, international recognition alone is not enough. There is a need for stronger partnerships, improved financing structures, better distribution opportunities and greater access to international markets.

African filmmakers have continued to produce stories that reflect the continent’s history, culture, experiences and changing social realities. However, reaching wider audiences often requires partnerships with international distributors, production companies and streaming platforms.

Festivals such as AFRIFF provide an opportunity to address some of these challenges by bringing the relevant people into the same space.

As the 2026 edition continues, the attention generated by its Hollywood guests is expected to contribute to conversations about the future of African cinema and the importance of building a more connected global film industry.

For Lagos, the gathering is another opportunity to showcase its creative energy and welcome international personalities interested in engaging with Africa’s entertainment industry.

More importantly, the festival offers African filmmakers an opportunity to demonstrate that their stories deserve a place on the global stage, not merely as cultural representations but as compelling works of cinema capable of attracting audiences and investment worldwide.

With Hollywood and Nollywood personalities sharing the same platform, AFRIFF 2026 is reinforcing a message that has become increasingly important in the global entertainment landscape: African stories have a place in the world, and the people telling those stories deserve opportunities to be seen, heard and celebrated.

As the festival moves towards its November 7 closing, attention will remain on the films, conversations and potential partnerships emerging from this year’s gathering.
