Inaki Williams Condemns Pressure and Vandalism Amid Brother Nico’s Transfer Speculation

Ghanaian international and Athletic Club forward Inaki Williams has openly condemned the intense pressure and underhanded tactics that surrounded his younger brother Nico Williams’ recent transfer saga. The elder Williams revealed that the situation reached alarming levels, including a shocking act of vandalism at Nico’s residence.

Speaking passionately during a press conference at Athletic Club’s Lezama training ground, Inaki offered a rare and candid insight into the emotional toll the transfer drama took on his family. He criticized the external forces—particularly media outlets and rival clubs—for applying pressure on Nico in an attempt to destabilize his commitment to Athletic Club.

Ten-Year Commitment Despite Intense Speculation

Nico Williams, one of Spain’s most exciting young talents and a key figure in Athletic Club’s recent Copa del Rey triumph, recently signed a long-term contract that will keep him at the club until 2035. The move was seen as a major statement of loyalty in an era where young stars are frequently lured away by big-name clubs with deep pockets.

While the renewal has been warmly received by fans and club executives, Inaki Williams lifted the veil on the dark side of the negotiation period. He revealed that behind the scenes, the family endured weeks of unwanted attention, psychological pressure, and even acts of aggression.

“Ultimately, Nico is a world-class player, and it’s normal that there’s a lot of noise around him,” Inaki admitted. “But there were things we couldn’t understand. Things that went beyond football—things that affect you personally. And I think Nico, as well as the fans and journalists, have all learned a tough lesson from this experience.”

“External Noise and Lies” Damaged the Process

Inaki Williams was particularly critical of what he termed a “media campaign” aimed at swaying public opinion and pressuring Nico into a move, specifically referencing FC Barcelona’s rumored interest.

“We all know how the world of football works and how the pressure game is played,” he said. “But the pressure that was put on my brother and the fans was unfair. There was a media campaign designed to create instability. I believe Athletic Club, when they pursue a player, do it discreetly. Unfortunately, what we experienced was the opposite.”

He further suggested that several leaked stories during the period were completely fabricated: “Many of the things that came out were lies. The truth is, my brother had already made up his mind to stay. But his contract—a long-term deal through to 2035—had to be carefully constructed. It wasn’t something you could just announce overnight.”

Vandalism and Threats: “People Crossed the Line”

In one of the most disturbing revelations, Inaki disclosed that Nico’s home was targeted in a frightening act of vandalism. A mural honoring the young forward was defaced, and, shockingly, someone went as far as smashing a window on a car parked at his house.

“Those are things nobody talks about, but they leave a mark,” Inaki said, visibly emotional. “The mural being vandalized was already a blow. Then, someone went to his house and broke a car window. That’s not football anymore. That’s harassment.”

He continued: “It’s easy for people sitting on their sofas at home to criticize or say, ‘He should’ve done this or said that.’ But they don’t see the suffering behind the scenes. Watching my brother go through that, while I wear the captain’s armband for this club, was extremely difficult.”

A Lesson for the Future

Inaki expressed hope that this experience would serve as a wake-up call—not just for clubs, but for fans and the media alike. He urged all stakeholders in football to protect young players from toxic narratives and invasive pressure tactics.

“In a few years, when another youth player like Nico starts excelling, I hope we won’t repeat the same mistakes. I hope the football community can be more mature and respectful.”

He also commended Athletic Club for standing firm during the process and ultimately securing Nico’s future with the team.

“I’m proud of my brother for the decision he made. And I’m proud of the club for believing in him and building a project that values loyalty and long-term development. Despite everything, the outcome is a victory for Athletic’s identity and vision.”

Support from Fans and Teammates

Since Nico’s contract renewal was announced, support has poured in from fans and teammates alike. Club legend Iker Muniain praised the decision, calling it “a monumental step for the future of Athletic Club.”

Meanwhile, Athletic Club President Jon Uriarte released a statement reaffirming the club’s commitment to its homegrown talents.

“Nico’s renewal is a symbol of what this club stands for. We protect our own, and we build from within,” Uriarte said.

The saga has sparked broader conversations within La Liga about how transfer negotiations are conducted and the ethical boundaries that should not be crossed—especially when dealing with young players.

A Bright Future Amid Challenges

Despite the controversy, Nico Williams continues to shine on the pitch. After a stellar Euro 2024 campaign with Spain, his market value has skyrocketed. But with a new decade-long deal in place, he now looks set to be the cornerstone of Athletic Club’s future ambitions.

Inaki Williams, whose loyalty to Athletic is well-documented, concluded his remarks with a note of pride and caution: “This was more than just a transfer story. It was a test of values, resilience, and family. I just hope nobody else has to go through what Nico did.”

As the dust settles, one thing is clear: the Williams brothers have once again demonstrated their unwavering loyalty—not only to each other, but to a club that continues to stand out for its identity and tradition.
