The National Sports Authority (NSA) is considering whether to renovate or rebuild the Accra Sports Stadium as concerns over the facility’s engineering condition raise questions about its long-term future.
NSA Director-General Prof. Osei Sarpong said the authority would assess the available options but stressed that demolishing the stadium was not an immediate solution.
“For me, Accra Sports Stadium is a very good place. We have an engineering problem, and so that is one of the things we are looking at, but we cannot fix everything at a go,” he told Citi Sports.
“We will explore the options to determine whether renovation or building a new stadium would be the best solution.”
Prof. Osei Sarpong said the authorities would instead work to address the facility’s shortcomings gradually while determining the best long-term approach.
“In the interim, we cannot break Accra Sports Stadium down. So we need to look at the gaps one after the other and solve them gradually until we are sure the majority of the gaps are [addressed],” he added.
The Accra Sports Stadium remains one of Ghana’s major sporting venues and recently hosted the Black Stars’ Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against The Gambia.
The stadium had also been expected to host Ghana’s upcoming double-header against Somalia in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
However, Prof. Osei Sarpong indicated that the two matches were likely to be played at Essipong Stadium, with the NSA seeking clarification from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The possible change of venue comes amid renewed scrutiny of the Accra Sports Stadium’s condition and calls for a lasting solution to its engineering challenges.
