Obuasi West MP Calls for Urgent Investigation into Obuasi Clash

The Member of Parliament for Obuasi West, Kwaku Kwarteng, has called for a prompt and comprehensive investigation into a violent clash between illegal miners and military personnel in Obuasi. The tragic incident, which occurred on Saturday, January 18, 2025, claimed the lives of seven individuals and left several others injured.

The confrontation unfolded late at night around 11:00 PM, when a group of approximately 60 illegal miners reportedly breached the security fence of the AngloGold Ashanti mine and attempted to access the Deep Decline area. According to a statement issued by the Department of Public Relations at the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the miners were armed with locally manufactured rifles, pump-action guns, knives, axes, gas cylinders, and other tools. When confronted by military personnel stationed at the site, the miners allegedly opened fire, prompting the soldiers to act in self-defense.

In addressing the incident, Mr. Kwarteng expressed deep concern over the loss of lives and emphasized the need for accountability and justice. He disclosed that he had already engaged with the Divisional Police Command and the Municipal Police Command, who assured him that investigations were underway to uncover the events leading up to the deadly clash.

“I have contacted both the Divisional Police Command and the Municipal Police Command, who have given assurances that investigations are being conducted into the unfortunate loss of lives and injuries to others,” Mr. Kwarteng said.

He expressed confidence that the Military Command was also reviewing the incident to establish the circumstances of the encounter and its tragic outcome.

“I am confident the Military Command is also reviewing the incident to uncover the details of the build-up to the unfortunate event and what exactly took place at the scene of the encounter,” he noted.

The Obuasi West legislator further stressed the importance of transparency in the investigation process and called on security agencies to present their findings to President John Dramani Mahama.

“It is my expectation that our security agencies would put the findings of their reviews and investigations before His Excellency the President, John Dramani Mahama,” he stated.

Additionally, Mr. Kwarteng urged the government to expedite the investigative process and ensure that the findings lead to swift action. He underscored the need for the law to take its course to deliver justice and prevent such incidents in the future.

“We urge the government to speed up these investigations and act swiftly on the findings to ensure that the law takes its course and that justice prevails. Once again, we send our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims,” he added.

President John Dramani Mahama has already ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the violent clash. The President emphasized the need for accountability, directing that any individuals found to have acted unlawfully during the incident be held responsible.

The tragic events at the AngloGold Ashanti mine in Obuasi have reignited discussions about the ongoing challenges posed by illegal mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey” in Ghana. Despite numerous efforts by the government and other stakeholders to clamp down on galamsey activities, the issue persists, often leading to conflicts with law enforcement and severe consequences for both the environment and local communities.

Illegal miners frequently target mines such as AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi concession, driven by economic hardships and a lack of alternative employment opportunities. These incursions pose significant risks to the safety and security of mining operations, employees, and the miners themselves.

The Ghana Armed Forces, in its statement, noted that the military personnel acted to protect the facility and ensure public safety. However, the loss of lives and subsequent injuries have raised concerns about the methods employed in addressing illegal mining activities.

Community leaders and advocacy groups have called for a balanced approach to resolving the galamsey crisis. They emphasize the need for sustainable solutions, including creating alternative livelihood opportunities for those engaged in illegal mining and implementing stricter enforcement measures to deter unauthorized mining activities.

The incident has also brought attention to the importance of fostering dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders. Mining companies, government agencies, and local communities must work together to address the root causes of illegal mining and promote sustainable practices in the sector.

As the investigation continues, families of the deceased and injured are left grieving and seeking answers. Community leaders have extended their condolences to the affected families and urged all parties to maintain peace as authorities work to uncover the facts.

The AngloGold Ashanti mine in Obuasi remains a vital asset in Ghana’s mining industry, contributing significantly to the country’s economy. However, the recurring challenges posed by illegal mining underscore the need for a comprehensive strategy to ensure the safety and sustainability of mining operations while addressing the needs of local communities.

The tragic events in Obuasi serve as a stark reminder of the complexities of managing natural resources in Ghana. Stakeholders are hopeful that the findings of the ongoing investigation will provide valuable insights and lead to actionable steps to prevent such incidents in the future.

For now, the focus remains on ensuring accountability, delivering justice, and fostering a peaceful resolution to the tensions in Obuasi. The government and all relevant stakeholders are being called upon to take decisive action to address the underlying issues and promote a safer and more sustainable mining sector.
