ChatGPT creator OpenAI has entered into a landmark $38 billion (₵562 billion) cloud computing partnership with Amazon, marking a major shift in the company’s efforts to secure large-scale computing power while reducing its long-standing reliance on Microsoft.
The seven-year partnership will grant OpenAI access to Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure, including cutting-edge Nvidia graphics processors, to train and scale its next generation of advanced artificial intelligence models. The agreement signifies one of the largest cloud partnerships in history, underlining the increasing demand for computational resources that drive AI innovation globally.
“Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable compute,” said Sam Altman, OpenAI’s co-founder and CEO. “Our partnership with AWS strengthens the broad compute ecosystem that will power this next era and bring advanced AI to everyone.”
The announcement follows a major restructuring at OpenAI last week, during which the company transitioned away from its non-profit structure and redefined its partnership with Microsoft to gain greater operational and financial independence. She added that Microsoft’s decision to reduce its controlling influence has “opened doors for OpenAI to establish partnerships with competitors previously considered off-limits.”
The AWS agreement underscores OpenAI’s ambition to remain at the forefront of global AI development amid mounting competition from Google DeepMind, Anthropic, and xAI. The partnership also reflects Amazon’s growing focus on strengthening its role in the global AI ecosystem, following its multi-billion-dollar investment in Anthropic AI earlier this year.

Despite its impressive expansion, OpenAI remains unprofitable. Microsoft’s most recent quarterly report revealed that OpenAI incurred $12 billion in losses last quarter due to heavy investments in research, development, and cloud infrastructure. Analysts suggest that while OpenAI’s aggressive growth strategy is fueling rapid innovation, it is also contributing to growing concerns about the sustainability of the current AI boom.

The Bank of England, International Monetary Fund (IMF), and JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon have all sounded alarms about the scale, pace, and unpredictability of AI-related growth. Dimon told the BBC that “the level of uncertainty should be higher in most people’s minds.”
The OpenAI–Amazon partnership arrives at a critical time when nations across Africa and other developing regions are striving to build robust digital economies. The availability of advanced cloud infrastructure and AI systems could accelerate the continent’s digital transformation, improving access to modern technologies in education, health, agriculture, and finance.
