Volta Regional Minister Pledges to Revamp Tourism to Boost Local Economy

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has reaffirmed his commitment to revitalizing the region’s tourist attractions as part of a broader strategy to stimulate economic growth and create job opportunities for the youth. He believes that the tourism sector holds immense potential for generating revenue, reducing unemployment, and curbing rural-to-urban migration in search of scarce job opportunities.

Speaking during an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle, Mr. Gunu highlighted the region’s vast tourism assets, emphasizing the importance of strategic collaboration between key government agencies to maximize their economic benefits. He noted that with the right investment and infrastructure development, Volta could emerge as one of Ghana’s top tourist destinations, drawing both domestic and international visitors.

The minister underscored the critical role tourism can play in addressing youth unemployment, arguing that a thriving tourism sector could provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for many young people. He expressed optimism that by improving road networks and modernizing tourism facilities, the region could significantly enhance its appeal to travelers. He stressed the need for a collective effort between the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts to ensure the success of the initiative.

He pointed out that the presence of ministers from the Volta Region in these key sectors presents a unique opportunity to drive development. He assured residents that he would intensify collaborations with the relevant ministries to secure funding and implement projects that will transform the region’s tourism industry. He expressed confidence that these efforts would not only boost local revenue but also reduce the migration of young people to urban centers in search of work.

The Volta Region boasts some of Ghana’s most breathtaking attractions, including the renowned Wli Waterfalls, the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, the majestic Mount Afadjato, and the serene Keta Lagoon. These sites, rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage, have the potential to serve as major tourism hubs if given the necessary attention and investment. However, several of these attractions face significant challenges, including poor road access, inadequate visitor facilities, and insufficient promotion to attract a steady flow of tourists.

Over the years, tourism stakeholders in the region have called for improved infrastructure to enhance accessibility to these destinations. The deplorable state of some roads leading to major tourist sites has deterred visitors, affecting revenue generation for local businesses that rely on tourism. Mr. Gunu acknowledged these concerns and assured residents that addressing infrastructure deficits remains a priority. He stated that improving road connectivity would make the region more accessible, thereby increasing the number of tourists and boosting local businesses.

Investment in tourism, he noted, goes beyond physical infrastructure. He stressed the need to develop a comprehensive marketing strategy to showcase the Volta Region’s unique offerings. He called on private sector players to partner with the government in promoting the region as a top-tier destination. He also emphasized the importance of training local tour guides and enhancing hospitality services to ensure that visitors receive an unforgettable experience.

Tourism industry players have long advocated for policies that will attract investors to develop hotels, resorts, and other hospitality facilities that complement the region’s natural attractions. Mr. Gunu believes that a well-structured investment framework could encourage more businesses to set up in the region, further driving economic growth. He assured stakeholders that his administration is committed to creating an enabling environment for both local and foreign investors to thrive.

Beyond economic benefits, Mr. Gunu highlighted the role of tourism in preserving cultural heritage and fostering national pride. He pointed out that the Volta Region is home to a rich blend of traditions, festivals, and historical sites that tell the story of Ghana’s diverse heritage. Events such as the Hogbetsotso Festival of the Anlo people and the Gbidukor Festival offer an opportunity to showcase the vibrant culture of the region while attracting cultural tourism.

He stressed that by investing in cultural tourism, communities could benefit from increased patronage of local crafts, traditional performances, and indigenous cuisine. This, he said, would further strengthen local economies and provide artisans with a platform to showcase their talents to a broader audience.

The minister called on traditional leaders, local assemblies, and community members to actively participate in the development of tourism projects. He emphasized that local involvement is crucial in ensuring the sustainability of initiatives aimed at improving tourist attractions. He also encouraged the youth to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the tourism and hospitality industries, urging them to acquire relevant skills in tour guiding, customer service, and eco-tourism management.

As part of efforts to boost tourism, Mr. Gunu hinted at plans to engage development partners to support various projects in the sector. He revealed that discussions are ongoing to explore funding opportunities for improving infrastructure, upgrading tourist sites, and enhancing promotional campaigns. He expressed hope that with sustained commitment and support from all stakeholders, the Volta Region would soon be positioned as a must-visit destination for travelers seeking adventure, culture, and relaxation.

The minister remains confident that a well-developed tourism sector will significantly contribute to the region’s economic transformation. He assured residents that his administration is dedicated to making tangible improvements that will benefit communities and drive long-term prosperity. As he continues to push for infrastructural upgrades and investment in the sector, there is growing optimism that the Volta Region will soon witness a tourism renaissance, creating a ripple effect that will positively impact livelihoods and local businesses.

With a renewed focus on tourism as a vehicle for economic development, stakeholders and residents alike are hopeful that the government’s interventions will yield lasting results. Many believe that with the right policies, infrastructure, and strategic partnerships, the Volta Region could soon become one of Ghana’s leading tourism destinations, unlocking new opportunities for growth and development.
