Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has reaffirmed his interest in becoming head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars, citing the country’s footballing history and the quality of players at its disposal.
The Trinidad and Tobago legend is among the names linked with the vacant position following Carlos Queiroz’s departure, as Ghana look to revive their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars lost their opening Group C matches against Ivory Coast and The Gambia, leaving them bottom of the standings without a point.
Speaking to The Guardian, Yorke said Ghana had the talent to succeed but needed the right culture and commitment from its players.
“It’s a job I’d be interested in, given Ghana’s history and the players available,” he said.
“The talent is there. Build the culture and get the players to buy in, and the football will follow.”
Yorke enjoyed a successful spell at Manchester United, winning three Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League during the club’s historic treble-winning 1998-99 season.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports have appointed an interim technical team to oversee the Black Stars’ upcoming matches against Somalia.
Kim Lars Björkegren will lead the team, assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, while former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has been appointed goalkeeper trainer.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Somalia in their Matchday Three and Four fixtures next month, with a substantive head coach expected to be appointed in November.
Ghana will be hoping to turn their campaign around and keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 AFCON finals alive.
