Global Afrobeats sensation David Adeleke, better known as Davido, has opened up about a major turning point in his career — his first encounter with American R&B superstar Chris Brown. According to the Nigerian hitmaker, the meeting marked a significant shift in his musical journey and international visibility.
Davido shared this revelation during a recent appearance on the Bagfuel Brigade podcast, where he spoke candidly about his early interactions with international artists and the pivotal role Chris Brown played in amplifying his global reach.
“Meeting Chris Brown changed my life”
Reflecting on the moment that would spark a cross-continental friendship and musical collaboration, Davido revealed that it all started in 2018, thanks to a chance Facetime call.
“Meeting Chris Brown changed my life,” Davido began. “I met him in 2018. He had a Nigerian friend—one of his best friends. One day, that friend Facetimed me and my song was playing in the background.”
Curious and surprised, Davido asked where the call was coming from. “I asked him, ‘Where are you?’ and he said, ‘I’m at Chris Brown’s house.’ I was like, ‘What? Y’all playing my music?’”
To his amazement, the friend turned the phone to show Chris Brown vibing to the music. “He showed me Chris dancing to my song,” Davido recalled, clearly still excited by the memory.
The moment that sparked a friendship
What began as a casual introduction turned into a meaningful relationship. “He gave Chris Brown the phone, and that was the first time we spoke,” Davido said. “A few months later, I went to America and linked up with Chris. From the first time we met, we just naturally became friends.”
The Nigerian superstar emphasized the authenticity of their connection, highlighting that it was built on mutual respect and a genuine vibe. “It wasn’t forced. We just connected. From there, we started hanging out and making music,” he said.
“Blow My Mind” and beyond
Following their initial meeting, Davido and Chris Brown collaborated on several projects, the most notable being the 2019 smash hit Blow My Mind. The track, which became an instant success across Africa, the U.S., and Europe, showcased the seamless blend of Afrobeats and R&B, further solidifying Davido’s presence on the global music stage.
The song’s music video quickly garnered millions of views on YouTube, while also charting on various Billboard and international charts. “Working with Chris is always easy. He understands the sound, and he respects African music,” Davido said during a past interview while promoting the track.
Opening doors to the U.S. market
Davido’s relationship with Chris Brown has been more than just musical. According to the singer, it helped break cultural and commercial boundaries for Afrobeats artists in the United States.
“When an artist like Chris co-signs you, it opens doors,” Davido said during the Bagfuel Brigade podcast. “All of a sudden, you’re not just an African artist — you’re a global artist.”
Indeed, collaborations like Davido and Chris Brown’s helped pave the way for Afrobeats’ current rise in mainstream American music. In recent years, major global labels and streaming platforms have increased their focus on African talent, while African artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tems, and Asake have taken center stage worldwide.
A testament to friendship and cultural exchange
Beyond music, Davido described his relationship with Chris Brown as one of the most supportive friendships in his career. “He’s been real with me from day one. Whether we’re working or just hanging, it’s always love,” he said.
Their collaboration also represents the growing cultural exchange between African and Western artists. Chris Brown, who has shown a consistent appreciation for African music and fashion, is frequently seen dancing to Afrobeats tracks and collaborating with African acts.
Industry reactions and fan love
Fans have consistently praised the chemistry between Davido and Chris Brown, often requesting more collaborations from the duo. Their synergy on tracks like Lower Body, another fan favorite, continues to enjoy streaming success.
Music industry insiders also see their friendship as a model for Afro-Western partnerships that feel organic rather than engineered. “You can tell when the vibe is real,” one fan commented on Instagram after Davido’s interview clip went viral. “Davido and Chris Brown are one of the best cross-cultural duos.”
Looking ahead: Davido’s global plans
Davido’s career continues to evolve. With a strong international fanbase, sold-out tours, and high-profile features, the singer is focused on pushing Afrobeats to even greater heights. He recently wrapped up his Timeless world tour and hinted at upcoming projects that will further blend African and international sounds.
While reflecting on his journey, Davido remains grateful for the relationships that helped shape his path — and Chris Brown, he says, is undoubtedly one of them.
“Everything started to shift after we met. That’s not something I’ll ever forget,” Davido said, rounding off the podcast episode.
