“What Nigerians Call Love Is Survival — Rapper Erigga Criticizes Women’s View on Romance”

Nigerian rapper Erigga has sparked intense debate across social media platforms after making blunt remarks about the nature of modern relationships in Nigeria. According to the Warri-born hip-hop artist, many Nigerian women do not seek romance in its true form, but rather prioritize financial gain in their relationships.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, the outspoken lyricist shared his thoughts in a post that quickly went viral, eliciting thousands of reactions from fans, critics, and social commentators.

“Nigerian women date for survival, not romance” — Erigga

In the now-trending post, Erigga wrote:

“Nigerian women are not deep. They date for survival, not romance. Thus, intentional man means rich. Romance means monetary gesture. Love means footing their bills. What you people are doing in Nigeria, is not relationship.”

The statement has stirred a flurry of responses, with many questioning whether Erigga’s generalization reflects the reality of Nigerian relationships, or if it unfairly stereotypes women.

Erigga, whose real name is Erhiga Agarivbie, is known for using his music and social media platforms to express often controversial takes on social and cultural issues, particularly those affecting the everyday Nigerian.

Mixed reactions trail Erigga’s post

While some of Erigga’s followers agreed with his observations, others pushed back, accusing him of being bitter or making sweeping assumptions about women.

One X user replied, “Erigga is just saying the truth nobody wants to hear. Many Nigerian girls don’t even pretend anymore—if you don’t have money, you’re not in the game.”

Another countered, “It’s unfair to judge all women by the actions of a few. There are still women who value love, character, and commitment. Let’s not spread cynicism.”

Yet another user added, “If women are dating for survival, it’s because the society is tough. In a country where the economy is hard, love won’t pay bills.”

The economics of love in Nigeria

Erigga’s comments bring to light a deeper socio-economic issue often discussed in Nigerian media — the link between romance and survival. In a country where the majority struggle with unemployment, inflation, and unstable income, relationships have increasingly become transactional.

According to Lagos-based relationship coach Adaora Akunne, the situation is complex:

“It’s not that Nigerian women don’t believe in romance. It’s just that love, without financial support, feels unrealistic for many. In a society where women often lack equal economic opportunities, relationships sometimes become a financial safety net.”

Akunne also pointed out that societal expectations have evolved. “A man being ‘intentional’ today is often equated with financial responsibility — paying attention to needs, spoiling your partner, and showing care through tangible gestures.”

Celebrity opinions and cultural reflection

Erigga’s perspective isn’t new among Nigerian celebrities. Several artists, influencers, and public figures have made similar statements in recent years, citing their own experiences in the entertainment scene.

In a 2023 interview, singer Portable also echoed similar sentiments, claiming that “women only come when the money is flowing.”

Actress Tonto Dikeh once posted on Instagram that “love alone cannot carry a relationship in Nigeria,” emphasizing that financial capacity is part of showing love and commitment.

These views, while controversial, continue to dominate conversations, especially among young Nigerians navigating love in the age of social media, rising living costs, and shifting gender roles.

Critics say Erigga’s post lacks nuance

Despite some support, many critics say Erigga’s statement lacks nuance and paints women in a negative light. Activist and media personality Olufunke Ayotunde argued on a live Instagram session that such takes only fuel misogyny and reduce the complexity of human relationships.

“When men like Erigga make these statements, they’re not trying to address the root problems. They’re just venting frustration. Let’s talk about poverty, unequal economic systems, and how women are still expected to depend on men in many settings,” she said.

She added that true change will only happen when both men and women are empowered to build relationships based on mutual respect, values, and equality — not just financial expectation.

What is the way forward?

Erigga’s commentary, while controversial, does highlight an ongoing cultural conversation in Nigeria. The reality is that the traditional relationship model — where men provide and women nurture — is evolving. Yet, economic hardship continues to shape how people connect, date, and form long-term partnerships.

Relationship therapist Damilola Oluwatosin believes the solution lies in more honest communication and less societal pressure.

“It’s important for couples to define their expectations clearly from the start. If money is important to you, say it. If emotional connection is your priority, be clear. But also, as a society, we must encourage financial independence for both genders so relationships aren’t based on survival.”

Erigga remains unapologetic

So far, Erigga has not backtracked on his post. In fact, he doubled down in follow-up tweets, suggesting that his view is based on personal observation and experience.

In a later post, he wrote:

“Make una no vex. I talk my mind. If e no concern you, waka pass. But if you check am well, e get small truth.”

Whether people agree or not, it’s clear that Erigga has once again succeeded in igniting a national debate — one that cuts to the core of love, money, and survival in modern-day Nigeria.
