Tabi Addo Godfred, popularly known as Teacher Tiawa, has called on teachers’ unions in Ghana to unite and present a common front in addressing issues affecting teachers, arguing that division among the unions weakens their ability to secure meaningful results.
Speaking as a panelist on Lions Yard, hosted by Ras Pastor Cashier and aired on Nananom 92.5FM in Goaso, the Ahafo Regional capital, Teacher Tiawa said the recurring strikes by teachers would continue without meaningful progress unless the various unions worked together to pursue their concerns.
According to him, the unions must put aside their individual interests and operate under one umbrella to strengthen their position when engaging government.
“Until all the teachers’ unions come together to fight as one umbrella, they will continue to strike without midfielders and defenders,” he said.
Teacher Tiawa also criticised what he described as the tendency of some union leaders to prioritise their personal interests over the concerns of ordinary members.
“All the leaders think about themselves, not the members, so until they put personal gains aside, the strike will continue. Government will come and go, but it will remain the same,” he stated.
He urged the leadership of the various teachers’ unions to put aside their differences, focus on the welfare of their members and adopt a united approach in negotiations with successive governments.
He said a collective front would strengthen the unions’ bargaining position and help them pursue lasting solutions to challenges confronting teachers.
