East Africa Set for Historic CHAN 2024 Kick-Off as Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania Finalize Preparations

East Africa is poised to make football history as final preparations conclude for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which kicks off on 2nd August. The regional sporting showcase, jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, marks the first time three nations from East Africa will co-host a major Confederation of African Football (CAF) tournament.

The highly anticipated event, featuring Africa’s top home-based football talents, is expected to unite fans across the region and demonstrate East Africa’s growing capacity to stage major international tournaments. Organizers say all systems are in place, with sports infrastructure, hospitality, and logistics nearing completion ahead of the official opening day.

“We Are Ready”: Kenya’s Sports Minister Confirms Full Preparedness

Salim Mvurya, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, the Creative Economy and Sports, has assured football fans that the country is fully prepared to co-host the tournament.

“Everything that is required of us, we have done,” Mvurya stated confidently. “CAF has confirmed that we are making good progress, and we are more than ready to welcome Africa.”

Mvurya’s statement came shortly after a high-level CAF delegation, led by Secretary General Veron Mosengo-Omba, completed a final inspection tour of stadiums and training facilities across the host nations.

CAF Confirms “All Systems Go” for 2nd August Kick-Off

Speaking after the inspection, Mosengo-Omba expressed satisfaction with the level of coordination among the three host countries. While acknowledging minor adjustments were still being made, he declared that the groundwork for a successful CHAN 2024 had been firmly laid.

“We are ready,” Mosengo-Omba said. “Of course, there are small things—maybe a chair to move here, or something else to finalize—but we are ready to kick off on 2nd August.”

The CAF official praised the unity and teamwork demonstrated by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, calling their joint effort a model for future continental cooperation.

“The three countries are doing well,” he emphasized. “Their coordination is excellent, the shift in formation between venues is smooth. This is something Africa can learn from—seeing three nations combine their resources and effort to deliver a successful tournament.”

A Regional Showcase of Football and Cooperation

The African Nations Championship, unlike the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), features only players who compete in their domestic leagues. This gives an opportunity for locally-based talent to shine on a continental stage. CHAN 2024 is expected to attract thousands of football fans, scouts, and media representatives to East Africa, offering both sporting excitement and an economic boost.

This edition of CHAN will feature 18 national teams drawn from across the continent, with matches played across key venues in Nairobi (Kenya), Kampala (Uganda), and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). The tournament is expected to span several weeks, culminating in a grand final that will be watched by millions across Africa.

Hospitality and Tourism Sectors Gear Up

As the tournament draws closer, the hospitality industry across East Africa is preparing for a surge in tourist arrivals. Hotels, restaurants, and transport companies in the three host nations are anticipating a boom in bookings from foreign visitors and traveling fans.

Local tourism boards have also partnered with CHAN organizers to offer guided cultural experiences, showcasing the rich diversity of East Africa. From wildlife safaris in Kenya and Tanzania to heritage sites in Uganda, visitors are expected to get more than just football during their stay.

According to tourism operators, the combined CHAN and AFCON preparation efforts have already begun revitalizing post-pandemic travel interest in the region.

“This is not just a football tournament—it’s an economic opportunity,” said Charles Kato, a hotelier based in Kampala. “CHAN gives us a chance to put our region on the global tourism map.”

A Stepping Stone to AFCON 2027

Beyond CHAN 2024, the three East African countries are also using the tournament to prove their readiness to host the much larger Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027. The trio was awarded hosting rights for AFCON 2027 by CAF in a historic decision announced last year, marking the first time the prestigious tournament will be held in East Africa since 1976.

CHAN is therefore being viewed as a litmus test—a chance to showcase infrastructure, coordination, and hospitality capacity ahead of the continent’s biggest football event in two years.

“Our successful hosting of CHAN will build trust and momentum for AFCON 2027,” said Peter Ogwang, Uganda’s State Minister for Sports. “This is our time to shine on the African stage.”

Fan Excitement Building Across the Region

From Nairobi’s bustling football fan zones to Dar es Salaam’s beachside CHAN countdown concerts, excitement is reaching fever pitch as the tournament nears. Supporters of local and national teams alike are gearing up for an unforgettable football fiesta.

For many in the region, CHAN represents not only a sporting opportunity but a symbol of unity and progress.

“This is a big deal for East Africa,” said Hassan Kikwete, a football analyst based in Tanzania. “For decades, we’ve watched major tournaments go to North and West Africa. Now it’s our turn. And we’re ready.”

CAF has praised the enthusiasm and collaboration from local organizing committees, saying it sets a precedent for future multi-nation hosting arrangements.

Final Preparations Underway

In the final days leading up to kickoff, the three host countries are making last-minute refinements to ensure a seamless experience for players, officials, and fans. This includes fine-tuning transport logistics, improving signage in stadiums, installing broadcast equipment, and ensuring high-quality pitch conditions.

Security arrangements have also been enhanced, with joint cross-border protocols developed to safeguard teams and spectators.

CAF has confirmed that all match venues have passed the necessary certification standards and that ticket sales are proceeding rapidly.

With the tournament just days away, East Africa is ready to take center stage and welcome the continent to a celebration of sport, unity, and culture.
