The Asunafo North Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Bawa Mohammed, has called on residents to be more cautious in their daily activities to help reduce disaster incidents within the municipality and the Ahafo Region at large.
In an interview with Francis Agyapong Nimpong, Mr. Bawa stressed that many domestic disasters can be prevented when people pay attention to basic safety measures, especially in the handling of electrical appliances and gas cylinders.
He advised residents to avoid using electrical appliances such as hair dryers and heaters in bathrooms or close to wet areas, explaining that water and electricity can be deadly when mishandled.
Mr. Bawa also warned against overloading electrical sockets with several extension cords, describing the practice as dangerous and one of the leading causes of fire outbreaks in homes.
“Residents should regularly inspect their electrical cords and replace any that are damaged or worn out. Homes with children should also ensure that unused sockets are covered with safety plugs to avoid accidents,” he said.
According to him, electrical appliances should always be kept away from water, while users must develop the habit of unplugging devices carefully by holding the plug instead of pulling the cord.
The NADMO Director noted that both the Asunafo North Municipal Directorate and the Ahafo Regional Directorate are intensifying public education to ensure the region remains safe from preventable disasters.
Speaking on gas cylinder safety, Mr. Bawa Mohammed urged residents to handle cylinders with extra care due to their highly flammable nature.
“Gas cylinders should always be stored upright in open and well-ventilated areas. They must be secured properly to prevent them from falling, and residents should constantly check for gas leaks using soapy water,” he advised.
He further cautioned the public against keeping cylinders close to naked flames or heat sources and warned against storing them in enclosed spaces such as bedrooms or poorly ventilated rooms.
Mr. Bawa Mohammed also encouraged residents to separate empty cylinders from filled ones and use safety chains, straps, or racks to prevent cylinders from tipping over.
He concluded by appealing to the people of Asunafo North and the entire Ahafo Region to make safety a priority at all times in order to prevent avoidable fire outbreaks and other disasters.
