Transfer Tug-of-War: Three Premier League Clubs Battle to Sign Chelsea Winger Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling’s future at Stamford Bridge appears increasingly uncertain as multiple Premier League clubs line up to secure the services of the experienced winger. According to fresh reports from the Daily Mail and talkSPORT, at least three top-flight English sides — Fulham, Crystal Palace, and West Ham United — are in pursuit of the England international, as Chelsea prepares for a squad overhaul under new manager Enzo Maresca.

Sterling, who joined Chelsea from Manchester City in the summer of 2022 for a reported £47.5 million fee, is reportedly considered surplus to requirements. His situation has sparked interest from several domestic rivals eager to add proven Premier League quality to their attacking lineups.

The 29-year-old spent the entire 2024/25 season on loan at Arsenal. However, the temporary move failed to reignite his spark, as Sterling struggled to make a significant impact. He managed just one goal in 27 appearances for the Gunners — a disappointing return that cast doubt over his long-term top-flight credentials.

Despite the underwhelming stint in North London, the former Liverpool and Manchester City star remains a player of significant pedigree, having won multiple Premier League titles and featured in England’s national team at major tournaments. His experience, versatility, and pace still make him a valuable asset — if the right environment can help him rediscover his form.

Chelsea’s New Direction

Under Mauricio Pochettino last season, Sterling was gradually edged out of Chelsea’s starting plans, and the arrival of Enzo Maresca this summer appears to have cemented his position on the transfer list. With Maresca expected to bring in younger, high-pressing players to execute his vision, Sterling is seen as one of the high-earning players the club is willing to offload to trim the wage bill.

Chelsea, who have spent significantly in recent transfer windows, are now keen to offload players who are not central to their future plans. The West London club is currently reshaping its squad around young talent, with a clear focus on long-term development over short-term stardom.

Sterling’s situation, however, is complicated by his lucrative contract. He is reportedly earning £325,000 per week — one of the highest at the club. This staggering wage could become a stumbling block for potential suitors unless he agrees to a pay cut or Chelsea subsidizes a portion of his salary in a loan or transfer deal.

Fulham, Crystal Palace, and West Ham Lead the Chase

Among the clubs expressing concrete interest are Chelsea’s West London neighbors, Fulham. The Cottagers, under Marco Silva, are keen to bolster their attacking options following the departure of several first-team players during the summer. Sterling’s Premier League experience and London roots make him an attractive option for the Craven Cottage outfit, especially as they aim to push further up the table next season.

Crystal Palace, another capital club, are also closely monitoring the situation. With uncertainty surrounding the futures of key wingers such as Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze, the Eagles are exploring backup plans should they lose one of their stars. Sterling would bring not only depth but also leadership and a winning mentality to a relatively young Palace squad.

Perhaps the most intriguing link is West Ham United, where a potential reunion with former Chelsea manager Graham Potter could be on the cards. Potter, widely tipped to replace David Moyes at the Hammers earlier in the year, has long admired Sterling and could see him as a cornerstone of a new-look attack.

West Ham’s participation in European competition next season also provides added incentive for Sterling, who may be keen on returning to a prominent role on both domestic and continental stages.

The Wage Obstacle

However, all interested parties are said to be hesitant due to Sterling’s current salary demands. At £325,000 per week, Sterling is among the top earners in the league, and very few clubs outside the traditional “big six” are willing — or able — to match such figures.

One solution being explored is a loan move with wage-sharing arrangements, where Chelsea would cover part of the salary. Another possibility could involve a permanent transfer at a reduced fee, with Sterling accepting a pay cut in exchange for more guaranteed playing time.

A close source to the negotiations told Africa Live News, “Sterling still wants to compete at the highest level. He knows he needs regular football to be part of England’s plans again, and he’s willing to consider all options, as long as it makes footballing sense.”

What’s Next?

As the transfer window continues to heat up, Raheem Sterling’s name is certain to remain in the headlines. While his recent form may have dipped, there is no doubt about his quality when fully fit and motivated. His next move could either mark a return to prominence or a further slide down the pecking order in English football.

Chelsea, for their part, are eager to resolve his future quickly to avoid dressing room uncertainty and allow Maresca to implement his plans without distraction.

With less than four weeks to the start of the new Premier League season, all eyes are now on Stamford Bridge and the negotiating rooms of Fulham, Crystal Palace, and West Ham — each hoping to land one of England’s most recognized wingers.
