Veteran Nollywood Actor Tom Njemanze Dies at 75 After Battle With Prostate Cancer

The Nigerian film industry is mourning the loss of one of its legendary figures, Tom Njemanze, who passed away at the age of 75 following a prolonged battle with prostate cancer.

The veteran actor, best known for his roles in classic Nollywood productions of the 1990s and early 2000s, died on Friday, July 19, 2025, as confirmed by close sources within the Nollywood community. Njemanze’s death marks the end of an era for many fans who grew up watching his powerful performances that shaped the golden age of Nigerian cinema.

Tom Njemanze was widely celebrated for his versatile acting skills and commanding screen presence. His body of work includes acclaimed roles in iconic films such as Tokunboh, Pounds and Dollars, Atosa, Issakaba, Osuofia in London, Brain Box, and Igbotic Love. Through his unique ability to portray complex emotions and bring depth to his characters, he earned a special place in the hearts of movie lovers across Nigeria and beyond.

Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, fans, and industry insiders who described the late actor as a trailblazer and mentor. Many praised his immense contributions to the growth and global recognition of Nollywood, which is now considered one of the largest film industries in the world.

Filmmaker Stanley Ontop, a close associate of Njemanze, had earlier revealed in a social media post that the veteran actor was battling prostate cancer and in urgent need of financial support for surgery. In a heartfelt video shared via Instagram, Stanley appealed to well-meaning Nigerians and members of the entertainment industry to come to the aid of the ailing star.

“Baba Tom Njemanze has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and he urgently needs surgery. Please, let us not wait until we lose another legend before we start pouring out tributes. He needs us now, not when he is gone,” Stanley said in the emotional video posted earlier this year.

Unfortunately, despite the call for support, the battle proved too difficult for the aging actor. His passing has now left many in the industry grappling with grief and deep reflection on how Nigeria supports its veteran entertainers, particularly those who helped lay the foundation for the current successes enjoyed in the sector.

Njemanze’s death has reignited conversations around healthcare access and welfare support for aging actors in Nollywood. Several fans took to social media to express frustration over what they described as “a shameful neglect of national treasures.” Some called for the establishment of a comprehensive health insurance scheme and retirement benefits for creatives who have given decades of their lives to entertaining the nation.

As tributes continue to pour in, many described Tom Njemanze as more than just an actor. To his peers, he was a dedicated professional, a generous mentor, and a man of immense discipline. To audiences, he was a screen hero whose voice and expressions could move viewers to laughter or tears in equal measure.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), which is expected to release an official statement in the coming days, is also likely to be involved in planning his final rites. Colleagues have already begun mobilizing for a befitting farewell to honour a man they regard as one of Nollywood’s foundational pillars.

Fans, friends, and fellow actors have also taken to various platforms to mourn the beloved star. On X (formerly Twitter), one user wrote: “Tom Njemanze was one of the reasons I fell in love with Nollywood. His delivery, his presence, his charisma—unmatched. Rest in peace, legend.”

Another tribute from a younger actor read: “He paved the way for so many of us. He taught us that acting was a craft, not just a job. Baba Njemanze, we will never forget you.”

While his physical presence is no more, Tom Njemanze’s legacy lives on through the characters he portrayed and the joy he brought to millions. His timeless performances continue to serve as masterclasses for aspiring actors and a source of nostalgia for those who remember the early days of home video entertainment in Nigeria.

As the industry reflects on his passing, many agree that the late actor deserves national recognition for his role in shaping the arts and culture space in Nigeria. Some stakeholders have even suggested that one of the major film festivals or awards be renamed in his honour, as a way to immortalize his contribution to Nollywood.

Family sources have asked for privacy at this difficult time but confirmed that funeral arrangements are underway. More details will be announced in the coming days.

Tom Njemanze is survived by his children, grandchildren, extended family, and millions of fans who will continue to celebrate his life and work for generations to come.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.
