Foreign Affairs Minister Summoned Over Deportation of Ghanaians

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has been summoned to appear in Parliament on Friday, February 28, 2025, to address growing concerns regarding the deportation of Ghanaians from the United States of America. Lawmakers are urging the government to take immediate steps to support deportees and implement measures to manage migration effectively.

The request for the Minister’s appearance was made by the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, who voiced his deep concern over the treatment of Ghanaians detained in the United States prior to their deportation. He highlighted reports of inhumane conditions at US detention centres where many Ghanaian nationals have been held before their forced removal.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, February 21, 2025, Reverend Fordjour emphasized the urgent need for the government to establish integration centres to assist deportees in reintegrating into Ghanaian society. He pointed out that many of those deported have lived in the United States for most of their lives and may struggle to adapt to life in Ghana without structured support systems. “What is most distressing about these deportations is not only the scale but the inhumane treatment our citizens endure at US detention centres before their forced removal. Stories in the news reports paint a grim picture of our citizens subjected to degrading conditions,” he stated.

The MP further elaborated on the need for comprehensive reintegration programmes that go beyond temporary assistance. “Some have spent most of their lives in America and will struggle to integrate into Ghanaian society without support, and it is therefore important for the government to establish structured reintegration programmes including job placement initiatives,” he added. He urged the government to develop policies that provide deportees with housing assistance, psychological support, and vocational training to enable them to reintegrate successfully.

The situation has sparked concerns across various sectors of society, with human rights activists and civil society organizations calling for diplomatic engagements to address the harsh conditions faced by Ghanaian deportees. Some organizations have criticized the handling of deportations, arguing that Ghanaian authorities need to be more proactive in protecting their citizens abroad and ensuring their dignified treatment before repatriation.

In recent years, the number of Ghanaians facing deportation from the United States has increased, raising questions about the effectiveness of Ghana’s migration policies and diplomatic efforts. Reports indicate that many of the deported individuals were apprehended for minor infractions or due to expired documentation, rather than serious criminal offenses. Critics argue that more should be done to assist Ghanaians in obtaining legal status in foreign countries to prevent such deportations from escalating.

Additionally, several deportees have shared their struggles of readjusting to life in Ghana, citing stigma, lack of employment opportunities, and inadequate social support systems. Some have reported facing rejection from their families, making their reintegration even more challenging. Without structured intervention, many of them risk falling into poverty or engaging in unlawful activities due to a lack of viable alternatives.

The call for the Minister’s appearance in Parliament is expected to intensify discussions on Ghana’s approach to migration and deportation policies. Lawmakers are likely to question the government’s response to the growing issue and explore potential diplomatic engagements that can be pursued to ensure better treatment of Ghanaians abroad.

As the debate gains momentum, advocacy groups are pushing for a more humane approach to managing migration. They stress the need for improved bilateral relations with host countries, ensuring that deportations are carried out with dignity and respect for human rights. Some have also called for the establishment of a special government task force to monitor and address issues related to Ghanaian migrants abroad.

The government’s response to these concerns will be crucial in shaping the future of migration policies in Ghana. With a rising number of Ghanaians seeking opportunities abroad, policymakers must balance the need for international cooperation with the responsibility of protecting their citizens. The upcoming parliamentary session will provide an opportunity for the Foreign Affairs Minister to outline measures being taken to support deportees and address the concerns raised by lawmakers and advocacy groups.

In the meantime, affected deportees and their families continue to await decisive action from the government. Many hope that the discussions in Parliament will lead to tangible solutions that not only assist those who have already been deported but also prevent future cases of mistreatment and forced removals.

The issue of deportations and the treatment of Ghanaians abroad remains a pressing concern, with calls for long-term strategies to address the root causes of migration. The demand for job opportunities, better living conditions, and stronger economic prospects in Ghana is crucial to reducing the number of citizens seeking to migrate under uncertain circumstances. Until these underlying issues are addressed, the cycle of migration and deportation is likely to persist.

The upcoming parliamentary session will serve as a critical moment for the government to demonstrate its commitment to protecting its citizens and ensuring their fair treatment, both within Ghana and abroad. As the nation waits for the Minister’s appearance, the focus remains on securing justice and dignity for those affected by these deportations, while also laying the groundwork for comprehensive migration reforms that serve the best interests of the Ghanaian people.
