President Tinubu to Host Historic NPFL Champions Remo Stars at Aso Villa

By Africa Live News

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to receive newly crowned Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions Remo Stars at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, in a landmark recognition of the club’s historic achievement.

Though the exact date for the visit has yet to be announced, the presidency has confirmed that preparations are underway to officially host the Sky Blue Stars, who became the first privately owned club in more than two decades to win Nigeria’s top-flight league title.

The 2024/25 NPFL season marked a turning point in Nigerian football as Remo Stars, based in Ikenne, Ogun State, secured their first-ever league title, ending the dominance of traditionally government-backed clubs.

A Monumental Achievement for Private Football Ownership

Under the guidance of head coach Daniel Ogunmodede, Remo Stars broke new ground by rising from near champions to title winners, having finished as runners-up in the previous two seasons. Their consistency and resilience paid off as they lifted the NPFL trophy, an accomplishment that not only secured them a place in next season’s CAF Champions League, but also etched their name into the annals of Nigerian football history.

The club’s success has been hailed as a major milestone for privately funded sports institutions in Nigeria, often seen as underdogs in a league historically dominated by clubs like Enyimba FC, Kano Pillars, and Rangers International.

“We are extremely proud of this team. It’s not just about winning the title—it’s about proving that private football can thrive in Nigeria,” a club executive told Africa Live News.

Presidential Recognition for a Groundbreaking Feat

Sources close to the Presidency confirmed that President Tinubu sees the club’s victory as a reflection of the potential within Nigeria’s youth and private sector, aligning with his broader national agenda to promote private enterprise and talent development.

“President Tinubu believes Remo Stars’ triumph is symbolic of what Nigerian youths can achieve when given the right platform and leadership,” a senior aide to the President disclosed.

The presidential reception is expected to include key figures from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ministry of Sports Development, and other prominent stakeholders in Nigerian football. Players, coaching staff, and top officials of Remo Stars will also be presented with commemorative awards and presidential commendations for their efforts.

Coach Ogunmodede’s Tactical Masterclass

At the heart of the club’s success story is head coach Daniel Ogunmodede, whose innovative tactical approach and player development philosophy have transformed Remo Stars into a powerhouse. Ogunmodede, often praised for his work ethic and attention to detail, guided his young and ambitious squad to the top of the table despite stiff competition.

“It’s been a long journey for us,” Ogunmodede said after clinching the title.
“To finally win it, after falling short in back-to-back seasons, is a dream come true for the club, our fans, and the entire Ikenne community.”

He emphasized that the achievement was not just a personal win, but a victory for every small club fighting for space and recognition in Nigeria’s competitive football landscape.

From Grassroots to Continental Ambitions

Remo Stars’ journey has been nothing short of inspirational. Founded with the vision to harness grassroots talent in Nigeria, the club has risen steadily through the ranks—from amateur football beginnings to NPFL promotion in 2016, and now as league champions.

Their commitment to youth development and infrastructural investment, including a well-maintained stadium and training complex in Ikenne, sets them apart in a league where infrastructure is often a limiting factor.

The club will now shift focus to the CAF Champions League, where they are expected to represent Nigeria alongside other top-tier clubs from across the continent. Their participation will mark a crucial test of their competitiveness on the African stage.

“We’re not just going to add numbers; we’re going to compete,” said team captain Dayo Ojo, speaking on the club’s upcoming continental challenge.
“We know the weight of expectation on us, and we are ready to make Nigeria proud.”

Fans and Football Community Celebrate the Moment

The club’s title win has sparked celebration across Ogun State and the wider football community in Nigeria. Fans flooded the streets of Ikenne after the decisive match, waving banners, chanting the club’s anthem, and expressing joy over their long-awaited success.

“This is more than football. It’s a movement, and it gives us hope,” said a lifelong Remo Stars supporter who traveled from Lagos to watch the final home game.

Even rival clubs have publicly acknowledged the magnitude of Remo Stars’ success, with several NPFL managers and players congratulating them on social media and in press interviews.

What the Future Holds

With President Tinubu’s invitation, the Remo Stars are now poised for greater visibility, potential sponsorship deals, and increased national support. Football analysts believe this could inspire a wave of private sector investment into Nigerian football.

“This is a watershed moment. If properly leveraged, Remo Stars’ triumph can lead to a new era of NPFL professionalism,” said sports analyst Tunde Ogunbayo.
“What they need now is sustained support from government, fans, and corporate Nigeria.”
